is there a graphics card between 100-150$ that can run games such asRome:Total War.( Withnolag )I really dont know anything about pc hardware and would like a little advice before i buy something. Its a Hp pavillion desktop. It has a Intel(R) Celron(R) 2.70 GHz processor. I have 1 Gig of Ram ( may be updating that soon ). I recently put windows vista ultimate on it. I would prefer to buy the card from bestbuy so if you would please help me find the best card they got around that price i would be really grateful. Thanks in advance. I have a ps3 but i love rts games and rts is making a slow ( very slow )transition to consoles. If you need any more info please let me know or if you recommend any other sites for me to ask about this

That is pretty overpriced for a 9800GT. HERE is a better priced one even though it is only 512MB.

Either of these:

card one

card two

Will perform better and cost less than the card you linked, assuming your power supply can handle the 9800 series.

buy from tigerdirect, new egg and possbily amazon.

Just look around, some times one of those sites has a deal superior than the rest.

I live in CA, i have to pay taxes for newegg, but not for amazon or tigerdirect.

Tiger direct usually has 2 dollar shipping for certain items, while sometimes newegg has an item priced lower with free shipping. It all depends.

And honestly 1gb for Vista ultimated is really low. Upgrade to 2gb of ram. What's your curent graphs card? Or is it integraded (onboard)?

Also if anything that processor is really crappy.

Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP
1.0 GHz Processor
256MB RAM
2.9 GB HDD space
8x CD-ROM drive
64 MB DirectX 9.0b compatible Video Card
DirectX 9.0b compatible 16-bit sound card

Honestly a 9400Gt would be fine for that game, anything higher would just be a waste with that processor.

Just get this

If you're talking about 1gb video card, then no.

If the question was Hd4870 512mb or Hd4870 1gb i'd say go for the 1gb.

But with a low end card, no 512 is fine. You have a single core Celeron at 2.7 ghz, am I correct?

If so then a 9500GT is the best you should get. Also keep in mind better graphics card require good power supplies and HP usually gives pretty crappy power supplies. I use to use an HP, then I THEN(accidently put just) realized instead of wasting time on it i'd save and either build one or buy a custom made pc.

The old HP I had wasn't extremely bad at it's time though, it had an AMD 4600+x2, I had an 8600 GTS with it.

Just go to HP's website, type in your model number, and they'll tell you what type of mobo you have, or better yet you can give me you processor's full name and I'll look it up for ya...

For Rome you don't need that good of a card. A 7600GT would suffice.

Well, I'm sorry to tell you buddy, but they no longer sell CPU's for that socket, unless you buy online. 775 is the major socket, and even that is getting phased out pretty soon.

I would advise you to buy a cheap card that will let you play Rome medium atleast, then just wait out until you can upgrade your whole system. That motherboard isn't the best for upgrading to play recent games..

He only has PCI slots - not PCI-E or AGP... I'm thinking the best GPU he can hit is a 9400 or similar in PCI ... :|

You should get the entire system at once, nothing in your existing system is compatible with modern parts.

Then wait a couple of months - there is absolutely zero sense in buying things piecemeal and then not being able to do anything with them for months on end. You're going to want around $600 to start with, as you need a new "everything".

Save up some cash, in a couple months time prices will fall and you'll benefit from i5's release for the 775 prices or even Phenom II prices to go down.
