The DRM was removed because it was no longer necessary. It was added specifically to prevent pre-release downloading and usage. Not really useful after the game is released. More importantly, the GoG version of the game never contained DRM, so it would be wise to keep both in line with each other. A calculated PR move? More than likely. This wasn't done out of the goodness of their heart.
On a side note, I refuse to purchase the Witcher 2 until they fix the registration servers for the first game, so the people who have a legit, physical copy have the ability to actually play it.
