As far as i know you need at least a 450w power supply to run a 3870. Plus your CPU will just bottleneck a GPU so you should probably get a Core 2 Duo processor as well.

you know what.. dell = evil
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 2 DIMMs [subtract$420]
4GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz -4 DIMMs [add$420or$13/month1]
380$ = 4GB : DDR3 1600mhz from newegg :) 4GB of ram = 60$ in sale for 800mhz
667mhz = 20$ 2GB from most of small pc shop

dell = evil
if you don't think a piece that worth 20$ sold at 200$ Is not evil then the one who betrayed jesus was a saint lol
or someting like that

oh damn sorry. it was mainly about the gpu and psu, not cpu. i know the processor will bottleneck it, but would a core 2 duo processor work on my motherboard? its not too new, but is the socket the same? and i dont have much plugged in my psu, so would it be ok? what would happen if there isnt enough power?

sorry i cant be more helpful, i dont know any of the models of my parts. i will try and find out.

thanks

i have just found out my mother board is either a Intel 925XE Express chipset, or a Intel 925X Express chipset. dell isnt more specific. but as far as i know, they are both LGA775, so dual core should run?

its mainly the gpu i need to replace, cos i can play games with my processor, but i have a radeon x300 :( and its poo. everything looks like a ps2 game at best :(

im just not sure what will happen if i dont have a powerful enough psu for the card i wanna get.

cheers

I'd say if you're on a moderate budget, get something like an E4300. If you're on an extreme budget, get an E2180 or something. But yeah, you'd definitely need at least 450W for the 4870. Hell, even the 4850 recommends that you have 450W

Well the 4850 is about 20 dollars more expensive (160 on newegg), which will crush the 3870...pretty badly. If that's too much, you could spring for the 8800GT, which is the same price as the 3870, but definitely a better performer. Just though I'd put that out there.

i dont know alot about computers, so would a 4850 with a slower clock speed beat a 3870 with a higher one?

Yeah, since the 4850 is one generation newer and is far more beefy than the 3870. There's no reason to go with the 3870 in this point.

Just make sure you get good and reliable PSU, maybe Corsair HX520 would be perfect choice

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-011-CS&tool=3 that power-supply would Durability about 5 to 7 year easy in deed i don't like the brand you putted. corsair ftw and a 750 WATS. corsair (orange box) is one of the best on market and reliable to not explode or anything while the one you put from basic is hell sure to explode sooner or later ;)
or a 550 wats but a 750 wats is more wat power so good for few year
and corsair are not only Sexy thing They are powerfull thing in psu only PC POWER & cooling apparently as a big warranty 24/7 and as better quality then corsair but there price are super expensive it for it so super durability corsair ftw
