that will be more then capable for those games. Crysis is a lot more forgiving at lower res. all current console ports should play great too.

You could even use a 5750 at that resolution.

A 275 at that res? I wouldn't go higher than a 260/4870. My GTX 275 maxes games at 1920X1080.

4770 plus a dual core CPU is about all you would need at that resolution.

XFX HD 4770 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150369

AMD Athlon II X2 240 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103688

Subtotal - $171

Though for maxing(YOUR NOT GOING TO MAX CRYSIS) you could get a GTS 250

MSI GTS 250 -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127445

If you really want to spend $100 on a CPU you can pick up an AMD Athlon Quad core for $99

AMD Athlon II X4 620 -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103706

a 275 is overkill for that resolution, even a 4870\GTX 260 is a bit over for what he needs

Technically no single GPU can "MAX OUT" 2/3 of the games you listed so people posting "overkill!" on a 5770/4870 need to read a bit more reviews.

Heres my 2 cents, first of all if you cant afford a HD5850/5870 completely ignore DX11 cards at the moment a 4870/260 outperform the 5770 and cost less, so I would go for a HD4870 orGTX260 if you can stretch to a HD4890 ora GTX 275 I highly recommend them.

Im running a HD4890 on the same resolution and theirs no disadvantage for running games at 80fps it just means that yourGPU would last longer.

and here's the thing guys... you NEVER buy parts for now. You buy parts for the future. You don't want to have to get a new GPU in 1 year because you cheaped out. He may get a new monitor sometime soon.

My 4890 doesn't at 1680x1050. So I guess 4890 would be a suitable cheap card for 1280x1024. I hate people saying something is overkill. Nothing is overkill, you'll just get more performance. And 4890 is dirt cheap at the moment anyways.

You must be referring to Crysis and GTA IV in that statement. My idea of "maxing out" a game is playing it at the highest possible detail settings, resolution and AA aside. I don't have GTA IV, but I do have Crysis and Warhead, and my 5870 completely maxes out both games at 1680x1050 with 2xAA at over 35fps. I'd have to guess that a 5850 could do roughly the same at 1280x1024.

I can run most games at highest settings on my ATI 4650 (Nothing too crazy like Crysis) on that resolution, good card for £30.

I reckon splash out a little more on a graphics card than that though. You don't want to limit yourself. I reckon 4770 is good enough, but maybe you should go quad core CPU since more games are being optimised for this? Or the extra money could be used towards a better graphics card? But then again, a quad core gives you more than just better framerates in games. Trust me, if you have dual core, running an antivirus task in the background certainly doesn't make things fun. You should go quad core. If i had more money I would have.

No, it is not. Firstly, you are not taking into account that later he will want a bigger monitor. Secondly, if you want to max every single game out there on the highest possible settings (including filters (AA/AF)) on 1280x1024, not even GTX275 will suffice.

I think that says it all tbh. SO the 5770 would be overkill? I think so right now, unless you see this a future investment. I use a 4850 slightly OCd at 1680x1050, play crysis warhead all high, no AA, great framerate. Everything else, maxed out, with 4xAA.

The 5770 performs UNDER the 4870 and it cost s about the same as a 4890 BEFORE MIR.

HIS HD 4890 - $179.99 + $20 MIR

XFX HD 5770 - $174.99

You need a few dots and commas there... Anyway, for the TC, if you think you are going overkill by spending your budget on something you can afford and should get just because someone tells you it is not needed for the resolution you CURRENTLY play at, play on and get 9400GT...

Dousn 4890 get hot besides 5770 price should be dropping when production rises due to production problems at ATI
