A couple of days ago my monitor when black, started flashing greens and pinks then died. I couldn't get it started again so did a hard reset (this is on the PC in my sig). Booted fine buthad two verticle lines on the screen constantly where the pixels were black. In windows the resolution has gone right down and looking at device manager it showed there is a problem with my GPU drivers.

So I did a system restore and rolled Windows back to a point three days ago but the driver issue was still there! Then I downloaded the latestdriverfrom NVIDIA which fixed the problem for a few hours.

This morning I can only work for minutes before the drivers fails, the screen changes to wacky colours and then freezers! Is this really a driver error or is has my GPU come to the end of it's life? I bought the card on release so it's a few years old now.

Any help or suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

What drivers did you download? Do you know what its temps are? Are you running overclocked? It sounds to me that the fan has gone dead and when the temps get to high the card becomes unstable and crashes.

The driver is version 190.62 date 21.08.2009 official drivers from the website. In device properties it reads "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" I then clicked 'check for solutions' and got "Could not load driver software"

I haven't checked the temps as yet but on turning on the pc the fan did not start for a couple of seconds and then started but isn't going very fast, however, I'm not sure whether this is normal or not. Not sure what else to do at the moment.

Is the fan on the Video Card, not the case fan, working? You'll have to open up the computer and see if the video card fan is working. If not, then that explains the problem.

Download GPU-z to check your temperatures.

The post above about the fan is about the fan on the GPU. When I turn on the PC the GPU fan does not start turning for about 4-5 seconds, then seems slow.

I've just downloaded GPU-Z. For some reason, on the sensors tab, the GPU and Memory clocks are stated as being 0.00MHz, I don't know whether that is significant. The temperatures are 64.8 (GPU) and 60.8 (PCB) and the fan is running at 60% at 1474RPM. Those figures don't seem too bad to me. What do people think??

the gpu clock = 0 and memory = 0 don't look right. Also is "forceware" a vendor driver or 3rd party/OC driver?

No, the driver is the latest driver from NVIDIA themselves.

I would guess that the card is bad. If you are OC'ing, try running without OC.

Try completly uninstalling NVIDIA drivers and reinstal them.

It isn't and never has been OCed. I've tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling but doesn't have any affect. So you think it might be a hardware thing then?

Probably. The error (43) means that the driver has reported a HW problem. If possible, try borrowing a similar (NVidia 8800 or better) card from a friend to see if behaves in the same way.

Install the latest nforce drivers for your motherboard as well.

If you are careful and understand the risks, You may want to flash the reflash the video card BIOS. If the issue is with the software within the card, this will most likely solve the issue. Try to see if your manufacturer can give you the default BIOS for your card and flash it using nvflash. Make sure you follow the directions, otherwise you can brick your card and there is no coming back.

If that doesn't fix the problem, either you can run it in a new computer or reformat your own. If that doesn't fix the problem, you're pretty much done.

I hate to say this, but I think your GPU is done. My friend had an 8800gt that did the same exact things.. and in the end it was unreliable at best. Fortunately the rest of your system is good enough that it would benefit from a newer GPU anyways :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried all of the above and still no joy. I think it's time to face the music. On the up side though I get a new GPU.

So, what would you recommend for my system? I've been looking at some of the newer cards and they need about loads of power cables! Not sure my MOBO can accommodate!

Whats your PSU and budget? If your motherboard can run a 8800GTS that means it has a PCI-E slot and thats all we require from your motherboard, the real question is power and budget. A 4770 will be good for low-on budget, if you want more you can get a 4850/4870 or even 4890 if you can afford 200$.

I have a Corsair HX620, which isn't enough for the GTX295 but looking at prices I couldn't afford that anyway! Well over £300!! I thought it had been out for a while too. Not really sure how much money I have, will check.

Well, I take it you're in UK? A 4890 is 150 pounds and its quite a beefy card. It'll serve you well.

I'm wondering about DirectX11 now. Hmmmm, though I suppose the DX11 cards won't be out for some time.

Edit: How much juice would a GTX275 need do you think? I've submitted a support request with XFX now just to see what they say.

The HD 5870 drops Sept. 23 in Europe, it'll be the first DX11 card. Problem is, I don't think we'll see many (if any) games utilize DX11 until 90% of people have them. The card won't be that expensive ($300 here, not sure how that translates in the UK), so you may indeed want to look into it. Also, the recommended PSU for a GTX 275 is about 550w.

I see that you have a 680i chipset. Before you assume that the card is bad, do a search on the internet for video corruption errors like yours due to nVidia chipsets.

Thanks for the helpful posts. I've tried all of the above now and after some more research I've found that my card is almost certainly fried. I'm looking at the GTX275 now I think. Does anyone have any idea about the warranty on my card in the UK with XFX? I'm sure I can lifetime warranty if registered within 30days of purchase, which I did. It's a pain as I have to wait until monday before I will get a reply from XFX and then it will be too late to get my card shipped if I do have to buy it. (I'm off back to uni)
