I want to get a new graphics card. I am wondering if it would be worth my money to up grade my GPU from ATI radeon 5450 to a 4870.

Anything's better than 5450. But for that money I'd rather get 5770/6770 with 1GB GDDR5. 4870 does perform a little better, but those 2 run cooler and quieter (usually) and draw less power.

Go for a 6870 if you can afford a little more money. Pretty much the best price for performance GPU out there.

Um... yes big time the Xenos gpu in the 360 has around 256mb of memory to use for games will only having 22GB/s bandwidth only performing at 240 GFLOPS A 4870 has 512mb to 1gb of memory with bandwidth of 115GB/s performing around 960 GFLOPS. So its about 5x faster

Personally, I wouldn't do it. I'd clench my teeth and war on with the 5450 to save some more to get at least a 6870. There's models from Sapphire and HIS starting from $145 after rebate at Newegg...

Doesnt mean he will get 5 times the peformance though, remember they squeeze every bit of peformance out of the Xbox and optimize the hell outta it, so some games may still run better on the Xbox despite the lower specs.

exactly so i would love to find out the erst of his specs so we can gauge the actual performance. if i had to guess what he has, its probably a OEM dell or something.

He didn't say anything about the rest of his system. 6870 might be bottlenecked by his CPU.

For $80 thats a good deal I will suggest though spending an extra $20 and get a 5770. Similar ( albeit barely lower ) performance but requires less power runs cooler and usually quiter and supports DX11 ( not that is that important at that point of time but still few games implement some nice DX11 effects )

4870 is a huge improvement over a 5450.

Get it.

You're right, of course, but it also depends on what the OP wants to do, gamingwise. The 4870 is three generations old by now, so, I still would wait a bit more and save up to be able to at least buy a 6xxx card (6870, or even 6950/70) just to stay more up-to-date...

DX11 with Hardware Tessellation is getting more and more integrated into recent and upcoming games, so, when the OP is into a serious spot of gaming, I'd keep that piggy-bank intact for a wee while longer.

I would probably want to go for something a little newer than a 4870, they ran sorta hot and are starting to show their age now I think.

4870 was shown to reach 1000 GFLOPs in SGEMM benchmark

I am in process of upgrading my HD4870 to HD6970 or GTX570 because its starting to show its age. But it all depends what games the OP plays and what resolution. I'd say wait a bit and save up couple more bucks and get a 6xxx series card. HD 6850 is around $150 at newegg

In that case i will also suggest save a bit more and get a 6850 they can be found for as low as $130-140 and are decently faster than 4870 and prepared to be amazed by the difference compared to 5450

We need your PSU info. A 4870 uses quite a bit of power.
