Hello, i would really like to build a new pc but am strapped for cash for a good few months so though i might buy a graphics card now for a short term boost in perforamce untill i can afford all the other parts.

I was wondering what GPU people would suggest for under £150ish, it will be mainly used to play Battle field 3 which im currently mainly playing in low and a few mediums on a 32" 720p tv.

My current set up is

Core 2 due e8200 currently at 2.6 but can take it 3.4ghz
Ati Radeon HD 5670 512mb
4gb ddr2 ram at 1.3ghz
ASUS P5KC mobo

Iv been recomended a 6870? Would this be a reasonable increase in performance and fit in well when i build my new pc with probably i5 cpu 8gb ram etc?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Its what my tv supports.

And surely overkill would just mean high-ultra graphics for a few years?

Well put it this way a GTX 560 & 6870 can play BF3 at 1920x1080 with an average of 45 FPS on Ultra settings. 1360x768 is half the workload then 1080. Also the 6870 has HDMI support which means you can use 1280x720 native resolution for your TV and more games will support that resolution then 1360x768.

Im currently using a HDMI out put but the recomend resolution according to windows is the 1360x768. Is that normal?
By the sounds of it the 6870 sounds like a good buy then

You can set it to 1280x720 isnt going to hurt anything.

Most 720p TVs actually have a native res of 1366x768 so use that.

Sorry for all the questions, the tv in the front room of my flat is 32"1080p, is the jump in resolution a noticable difference for both gaming and HD films? or whould the drop in performance not be worth it? would it be worth swapping once iv got a new card.

Thanks for all the help

It will run BF3 great. Heck, my son runs BF3 on ultra settings on a Phenom3 and a 6850. He's running on a 46in Sony Bravia @ 1080p.

Yeah, his old HP am2 mobo wouldn't really support a lot of CPU upgrades. It had a Athlonx2 5050e(Brisbane) CPU, so the Phenomx3 gave him the slight boost he needed. He used to have frame rate issues in games like APB, or Saints Row the Third. Now everything runs better. Not to mention the CPU only cost me 49.99.

lol, you said phenom3 instead of Phenom X3 so he thought you had a CPU from the future instead of a triple core. Just thought i'd clear that up.

Well, I thought most people up here were pc gurus, so they would know that Phenom3 = Phenomx3. Lol

You could also look at nvidia GTX 560s at a similar price point.
