The original Half-Life had a great engine, great for modding too: http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/action/halflife/images.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=gsimage&tag=images;all

I dont think it gets much better than the Source engine.

Scaleable, upgradeable, beautiful, awesome face rendering and animations...yep, best all-around engine out there imo.

Agreed. So well optimized too.

one problem it has though is that its rubbish at loading data on the fly in its current form. it can have big maps allright...but once a map needs switching then there is a bit of a waiting game.

if valve could implement a system where data can be streamded on the background.....then it would be the best engine in the business.

HL2 and its episodes....with no loading at all....that would be sweet :D.

still a great piece of tech though overall.

Unreal Engine 3 seems like the greatest choice right about now, it's top-notch in every feasible way.

I got issues with Unreal 3. All the games using the engine all look the same. The flat looking textures, shadow maps, etc, and alot of the stuff is really ugly unless put in the hands of the right developer, and even Epic wasn't able to get all the kinks out.

I have to say the source engine. It will run fine on 4 year old computers (heck, probably even further back if you turn all the settings down), and it can still tax the most powerful consumer machines on the market at it's highest settings.

Current Engine wise I'm gonna have to go with Source like many other people and for the same reasons. I also love how Valve isn't going to scrap it and code an entirely new engine but instead slowly evolve it with episodes and other games.

The best looking engine is Crytek's current one no doubt. But the most licencsed one today is Unreal Engine 3.

As for the past - for modding Half-life's was the best. And as for the most used one, it was a tie between Quake 3 and the UT engines..

If source needs one thing, it's a rewritten shadow and lighting system, because it looks ancient. The addition of a true flash light was nice in Episode 2 but the rest of the shadows and lighting looks ugly and out of date, not to mention the lack of self shadowing for the above direction light. As for the "system pushiness" that people mention is due to the extreme levels of AA possible with the game. I must mention that much of this is due to Valve trying to keep the game accessible with a multitude of computers as well as the added cost of developing new features, and even I can say the games using Source still look great, but I think rebuilding and addressing the said above issues is necessary if they want to make sure Source has a nice long future. Being a modular engine it's entirely possible to add these things, like they did adding bloom and HDR in Episode 1, the diirectional flash light, multi-core support and cinematic physics in Episode 2. Who knows what they'll do for Episode 3, hopefully the full shadowing and lighting system for high level options, as well as some more normal map usage and higher polygon counts.

That's why it's so awesome, though, is because of its modularity AND scalability. Pretty much every other engine I can think of does not evolve past a certain point and instead releases a new iteration, and each iteration is targeted towards a particular range of specifications.

Essence engine, Source, Cryengine2, Tech3 (i think...doom3?), X-ray engine is awesome (STALKER). I'm not a big fan of the Unreal Engine 3, nothing using it impresses me.
