I dont think it gets much better than the Source engine.
Scaleable, upgradeable, beautiful, awesome face rendering and animations...yep, best all-around engine out there imo.
CryEngine 2 or the Dunia engine (Far Cry 2).

Agreed. So well optimized too.
one problem it has though is that its rubbish at loading data on the fly in its current form. it can have big maps allright...but once a map needs switching then there is a bit of a waiting game.
if valve could implement a system where data can be streamded on the background.....then it would be the best engine in the business.
HL2 and its episodes....with no loading at all....that would be sweet :D.
still a great piece of tech though overall.
CryEngine 1.0 (Far Cry)
CryEngine 2.0 (Crysis)
Lithtech Jupiter EX (FEAR & Condemned)
Unreal 3 (I don't need to list games for this one)
X-Ray (STALKER)
Older Engines:
Source (Half Life 2)
Id Tech 3 (Doom 3, Quake 4)
Unreal Engine 3 seems like the greatest choice right about now, it's top-notch in every feasible way.Kev_Boy

me concur
Current Engine wise I'm gonna have to go with Source like many other people and for the same reasons. I also love how Valve isn't going to scrap it and code an entirely new engine but instead slowly evolve it with episodes and other games.
The best looking engine is Crytek's current one no doubt. But the most licencsed one today is Unreal Engine 3.
As for the past - for modding Half-life's was the best. And as for the most used one, it was a tie between Quake 3 and the UT engines..
