If it's overheating that sounds like its your fault for not cooling, or powering, it properly.
Q6600, stock, GTX280 stick, 4Gb RAM. FPS isn't great, I'll give you that much, but the game is entirely playable with the right hardware.
Funny that many people still have problems, I bought this game when it first came out here (was 200 ytl= 130 dollars or so :O) but it was completely worth it strange enough at first I had some problems and was dissapointed with my 1 month pc that I hadn't gone with a quad instead with a e8400, strangely the game runs really nice now, I didn't even do anythign special but update my drivers constantly (and of course properly taking care of my rig,) texture render is at high graphics at high and view distance 23 (not a problem for me since I stare at my character mostly especially while driving lol :P) and others cranked to 60-70 range, and no problems whatsoever my fps is fine 30+ , and the crazy thing is my resolution is 1280x1024 (native) and it isnt choppy, for people who don't know lower resolutions are more CPU intensive then GPU (vise versa), and I owna dual core.... so maybe your problem is drivers, try cut down on resolution make it more CPU intensive as you have a quad, take care of your PC (I think daytona has a really nice guide)
Specs:
-e8400 @3.0Ghz
-4gb G.SKill RAM @ 1066 MHz
-XFX black edition GTX 260/216Core
-Windows XP SP3
I picked this up for ten pounds yesterday. After a 1.5 hour installation, and numerous online forms to fill in, the game loaded. Even with all the settings on LOW, the game is still choppy. A couple of times my PC switched itself off from overheating. My rig isn't skynet, but still well within the specs recommended on the box. It's Q6600 quad, 8800GTS and 2GB Ram. Honestly, I warn everyone out there who has a decent rig PC. PLEASE dont buy this game. It runs far better on the 360. I dont know why, it just does. Buy yourself a 360, and a DVI cable. You'll save yourself a hell of alot of stress!michaeljcox24
works fine for me with almost everything on high (shadows on 0 though) after the last patch and ive got a similar rig to you (q6600, 4Gb ram, 8800gtx). sounds like your pc needs a clean or some extra cooling.
you could try taking out your gfx card, unscrewing it all and giving it a clean out. i did the same a while ago when i noticed framerate drops in certain games and my pc getting hot, opened up my card and there was a ton of dust clogging up the fan that i couldnt get to through normal cleaning / dusting. cleaned it all out, problem solved.
yeah the game is a joke and a disgrace to pc gaming.. same to rockstar games.. i really wanted to play it on the pc.. but the damn missing buildings.... well i choose th console version... and the patch is even worse, still better port than mercenaries 2...HellboardHi Hellboard this isnt a slagging post, just every thread i have seen you in recently you are mouthing off about this or that! So just a quick question do you like anything cause from what i have read you dont :D Anyway back on thread with the game patched up everything at the highest level except view distance the game runs great on my rig. As other people have stated a Quad Core is the way to go with this game.

Hellboard is always like that. I personally am having lots of fun in GTA IV. Almost never below 20 fps, everything medium, some high at 1440*900. Laptop specs: T7500 Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz, 4 gb ram, 8800M GTS 512 mb.the_ChEeSe_mAn2yeah i like fallout 3 , far cry 2, dead space, a bit mirrors edge, and bully plus gta iv but rockstar managed to shove my expectations in my butt  seriously pc versions make me cry the latest 2 years..
Yes, I agree, it is. My point was though, is my specs are better than the internals of the 360, yet the game runs worse on PC. Some games yeah, you can justify buying it for PC. Far Cry 2 for example. Not this one. michaeljcox24Rockstar North said they would increase the population density and increase graphic quality for the PC version compared to the Xbox 360 version. When that happens, the CPU will need to work harder to calculate every single moving NPC. That includes the NPCs driving in cars, stopping at stop lights and going when its green, NPCs walking on the side walks also take alot of CPU power to calculate. For those who have low end to medium end systems I would not be getting this game if they want a satisfying playing experience.
The PC version is better then the Xbox 360.
