What a handsome box. If we put that ontop of our computer towers it is the closest to having the game run on our computer!!

Where the hell are you buying your hardware? You can get a DVD burner for $10-$15 these days. A plain DVD drive might run around $5 if you can find a place that still sells them.

They always price gouge Australians (assuming by the use of dollars and the "MA-15+" on the box, but correct me if I'm wrong) on computer hardware. That's just the way it is.

Agreed. when I built my rig about 8 months ago, I think the DVD drive was the cheapest thing from newegg at around $15. Have had ZERO problems with it.

No. Grand Theft Auto games have never been the best looking games; they are demanding because of the sheer size of the environment and amount of different things happening all at once.

You needed to quote my whole post to type 1 line? Rockstar offered this official explanation about the graphics settings in GTA IV; THE GRAPHIC SETTINGS OF GRAND THEFT AUTO IV PC Most users using current PC hardware as of December 2008 are advised to use medium graphics settings. Higher settings are provided for future generations of PCs with higher specifications than are currently widely available. Graphics settings are limited by system resources by default. 256MB video cards force minimum settings by default. If a user bypasses these safety measures using command line arguments and exceeds their system resources, the users gaming experience may be compromised. Video Mode Resolution scaling effects water, reflections, shadows, mirrors and the visible viewable distance. The resolution settings relate to the amount of available video memory. At 2560*1600 the game will require 320MB of video memory in addition to all the memory required for content. At 800*600 the game will require 32MB of video memory in addition to the content. Medium resolution settings are recommended for most users as higher settings are only usable if there is available video memory. Texture Quality Texture quality affects the visual quality of the content of the game. High setting for textures will require 600MB of video memory at a setting of 21 View Distance in addition to the memory taken by the Video Mode. A medium texture setting is recommended for most users. Render Quality Render quality is the texture filter quality used on most things in the world rendering. Most people would know this as anisotropic filtering. Medium settings are recommended for most users and will provide filtering beyond what the console versions can execute. View Distance View distance scales the distance in which different objects in the world such as building and cars are seen. Raising this option increases the distance in which high quality objects must be loaded and will increase the memory it requires. Restrictions are established to ensure the game runs optimally for most users. A setting of 22 or more will provide PC users an enhanced experience over the console versions. Detail Distance Detail distance scales aspects of the environment that the View Distance setting does not including vegetation, trash and other moveable objects. A setting of 10 would be the equivalent to the performance on a console. This setting has little effect on memory. Vehicle Density Vehicle density scales the traffic density of the traffic in the game. It has no effect on the mission vehicles or difficultly of the game, but can have a significant impact on CPU performance Shadow Density Shadow Density controls the number of shadows generated for positional lights in exterior environments. These shadows are exclusive to the PC version and can have a major impact on CPU and GPU performance. Crossfire/SLI With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2) SLI is currently unsupported. Support will be added through a future game patch as well as an updated Nvidia driver. NOTE: Background Processes Certain background processes can have a detrimental effect on system performance when playing GTA IV, especially on systems with minimum required system memory. Users should ensure they disable their Virus scans (especially "on-access" type scans) when running the game to maximize performance. ---- I've only done limited tweaking on my version and if I lower the resolution to 1680x1050 I can get the game to use high quality textures. The renderer can be set to highest at 1920x1200 but to be perfectly honest I really don't notice much difference at all. The whole look is ruined by the crappy shadows (no matter what setting the game is on), and the lack of AA. Having said that though the game seems to run rather well.

I just showed the pictures from the PC version to a mate who has the 360 1. He says it looks a little better on PC. So I guess it isn't as bad as I think it is. I really can't remember what it looked like when I played on PS3.

I have exact hardware you have (gtx 260 core 216 superclocked, q6600, 4gb 800mhz RAM), but its nice to hear that when you bump it down to 1680x1050 (my monitors max resolution) the game seems to run well on high textures.

I'll probably buy this game through Steam in the very near future (next 48 hours or so)

texture quality medium... wtf its a gtx260...

texture qaulity is limited due to 512mb of VRAM my benchy (from memory) Statistics Average FPS: 32 Duration: 37.12 sec CPU Usage: 77% System memory usage: 75% Video memory usage: 80% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1280 x 960 (75Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: Highest View Distance: 40 Detail Distance: 50 Vehicle density: 50 Shadows: 6 Hardware Microsoft Windows Vista Home Ultimate 64-bit Service Pack 1 Video Adapter: Sapphire ATI Radeon 4850 overclocked to 700/2.2 Video Driver version: Cat 8.11 Audio Adapter: Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Music Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz 4GB DDR2 667 MHz RAM I am pleased with my results will fine tune some more to get 40FPS, some changes barely make a difference like: render high/very high/ highest not much seperate them shadows above 6 you wont notice any changes really detail and view distance above 50 you wont notice anything considerably different either texture quality being limited to medium is my only problem!

slightly disappointed with the graphics, hoped they would be a big improvement over the consoles.

its definitely smoother and sharper although the framerate fluctuates between 30 & 60 fps but its still very playable so no real problems.

these are just a couple of shots i took after finally gettin it to work. goin to have a fiddle with the settings a bit and see how good i can get it

Still a shame that only monster rigs can play this game adequately. This is truly a case of pc gaming moving backwards instead of forwards.

This game is absolutely insane! I've been tweaking the settings a fair bit and ended up dropping the resolution from 1920x1200 down to 1680x1050 (edit: after more tweaking I'm back at 1920x1200 - see below) so I could get a constantly playable frame rate. I ended up putting the slider for shadows down to 0, with it any higher the game just looks weird to me. Even though at 1680x1050 the option for high quality textures opens up if I actually use it the frame rate becomes unplayable, and after a few minutes the game just crashes. Below is the 1 high quality screenie I could be bothered taking before going back to the workable medium texture quality. Even at high quality I don't think the game looks very good for a PC game, having said that though I'm having a great time playing it on medium textures/highest renderer, etc. Who would of thunk it a GTX 260 Core 216 wouldn't be enough to run this game on the highest settings. I don't think I ever expected that. :) After much tweaking I've finally settled on the following; Statistics Average FPS: 51.46 Duration: 37.08 sec CPU Usage: 74% System memory usage: 70% Video memory usage: 70% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1920 x 1200 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: Medium Render Quality: Highest View Distance: 32 Detail Distance: 50 - Shadow slider is on 0, and the vehicle 1 is on 50. This gives a great frame rate at 1920x1200. The shadow slider really seems to be the killer for me.

start off with my bench mark...

Statistics
Average FPS: 37.78
Duration: 37.14 sec
CPU Usage: 92%
System memory usage: 72%
Video memory usage: 100%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1920 x 1200 (85 Hz)
Texture Quality: Medium
Render Quality: High
View Distance: 10
Detail Distance: 20

Hardware
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+
Video Driver version: 180.60
Audio Adapter: SB Live! 24-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 4400 @ 2.00GHz (its actually at 2.6ghz, althoguh it saids 2.00ghz)

imo, even with both the draw distance low (i HAD to have "view distance" at 10 to do 1920x1200, well worth it tho) it is quite a beautiful game especially on my monitor at that resolution, and im quite happy with 37 average fps, more than playable, it can only get better as tiome goes on with driver updates and patches

I was just checking the Steam forums and a guy there mentioned turning off the video recording option for a performance increase. My frame rate jump was massive. I now have textures medium, renderer highest, all sliders on 50 except for shadows which is on 0. I'm now pulling a massive frame rate and the game looks great. If you haven't done it yet try turning off the video recording option, and drop the shadows to 0. Here are some pictures with these settings at 1920x1200. The frame rate hovers between 45-60 FPS. I'm perfectly happy with this.

playing a game like GTA4 on those settings with a great rig like that is unacceptable. You can try to deny to yourself that u are not pleased with the game, but when a dual core and 2gb of RAM, and a 8800GTX or an overclocked 8800GTS can max out crysis, but not GTA4 then theirs something wrong.

You just wanted to act like a big man? Here you go I'll quote myself again so you can get a clue; The settings are the defaults auto picked for my machine... I've only done limited tweaking on my version and if I lower the resolution to 1680x1050 I can get the game to use high quality textures. The renderer can be set to highest at 1920x1200 but to be perfectly honest I really don't notice much difference at all. The whole look is ruined by the crappy shadows (no matter what setting the game is on), and the lack of AA. Having said that though the game seems to run rather well.

playing a game like GTA4 on those settings with a great rig like that is unacceptable. You can try to deny to yourself that u are not pleased with the game, but when a dual core and 2gb of RAM, and a 8800GTX or an overclocked 8800GTS can max out crysis, but not GTA4 then theirs something wrong.

Did you even read my post above this 1? The 1 where I mention I've got the game running at 45-60FPS at 1920x1200? I guess not!

I've spent a lot of time reading up and tweaking. My first impressions of the game were pretty bad, like everyones I guess. Now that some setting tweaks are becoming known the game is getting better and better. I've got to say I'm absolutely loving the PC version now. :)
