So GTA IV hits Steam tomorrow and I've been reading a lot of posts about how the game sucks. Does it REALLY suck? Were ALL of the console version reviewers on crack and under Evil Mind Control by The Man? Or is this just the usual complaining by the Gamespot PC forums curmudgeons who think EVERY game sucks (except for that command-line MUD they played in 1975 on the Illinois U. node of ARPANET)?

I mean, I don't want to waste fifty bucks, ya' know?

Thanks!

I think it's these forums. While GTA IV is certainly overrated IMO the people here are making such a big deal out of it.What game isn't overrated?I for one am sure that I will love the game and will gladly spend my 50 hard earned bucks to pay for it.

I mean, I agree that a lot of console ports stink, and in a perfect world, we wouldn't have to deal with them. But I also get the feeling that a lot of the grief this game is getting is merely the result of an undercurrent of hate towards consoles. Who knows? I'm just trying to separate the signal from the noise, man.

If it's anything like the console version, it will kick ass on so many levels. Especially at high resolutions :D

i had to force my self to finish it.

not that it was bad but you realize your doing the same thing every mission, drive here, drive there, kill him, drive back. That can be said about all the gta games.

its a good game i give it a 8. Graphics are great, pretty good story, solid controls. For some reason i enjoyed vice city so much more

Most of the fear is from the reviews. One said the game had major framerate issues using dual core and an 8800. That plus Rockstars recent terrible port quality has caused a stir in the masses. Another review said you have to login to two different services to play online. I played it on ps3 last year and it rocked really hard, well singleplayer anyways. Definitely the best in the series and a new beginning for it. Hopefully we will get that dlc.

Due to the system reqs, I might just get it on the 360. Would rather have it for PC, but not sure what I will do at this time.

If you like GTA then go for it, there was nothing different from its predecessors. I was pretty disappointed with it and definitely wish I hadn't spent my money for the 360 version. I couldn't even finish the game, it just made me wanna play Mafia which I thought was a far greater game of that genre.

I guess it depends on how much you enjoy doing the missions. I never finished a single GTA game as I found it was just a lot more entertaining to run around and cause as much chaos as possible. Since GTA4 has online multiplayer, I think I can overlook the boring mission aspect people seem to complain about.

yea system requirements are crazy, wouldn't be surprised if this runs worse than crysis. And the Game itself im not sure yet but i played it on a friends ps3 and i got bored pretty fast, althought i've never played the actual missions.

Here's my breakdown of the game. +'s Graphics - there's no sandbox game that looks this good. Physics - Physics on people is almost perfect. When you're wasted drunk and you hit some stairs wrong, you'll go tumbling down. When you run into people it looks painfully realistic. You shoot someone in the leg when they're running and they'll tumble to the ground. Story/dialogue/characters - You might not like the characters in the game but that's because they are designed to be unlikable while other characters fit perfectly in the world. Dialogue is great and the story is darker and a bit more mature in parts. Attention to Detail - This could fit in with graphics but i think it's notable enough to go in its own spot. The game has a constant flow through it and everything is in detail to the smallest little nuance. -'s Less things to do - Gone are a lot of the fun things you could do in Vice City and San Andreas. This maybe where the talk of linearity comes from because it feels like there's nothing to do besides the story and dates. Which brings me to... Dates: If people reading the San Andreas previews were worried about eating and working out taking over the enjoyment of the game, they found out they didn't have to worry because it wasn't that painful. Dates are. Nikos friends will call at the worst time all the time. Not answering the phone with lower their feelings toward you, answering and turning them down will do the same. Seeing as some of the side quests in the game deal with these friends having a certain level of interest in you, you have to play along with these annoying people. Women are just the same in this game. Physics - Car physics will take some getting used to and while they feel great after awhile and the collisions in the game look great. the realism in the physics removes almost all possibility of the kind of chases you're used to in previous GTA's

True in some aspects, but false in many others. At the core, yes it's the same idea. One huge difference is the omission of many of the optional activities and side missions. Those have primarily been replaced with the addition the multiplayer. Some see this as bad, others see it has an improvement. Personally, it didn't bother me. Many of those activities from San Andreus were just kinda silly. A big improvement in the game is the navigation. The GPS is an outstanding and so is the taxi cab service. And overall the the main campaign feels more solid then the previous games.

The game is great, though it doesn't have as much replay value as the previous versions once you finish the story, thought with the PC version you have the addition of user created content, which could possibly add lots of gameplay time.

The main problem/annoyance i had with the game is the change in the way the cops work. Instead of simply evading them and perhaps picking up a police bribe along the way and you'd be done, in GTA IV it's no longer this easy. Even if you evade the cops chasing you, you'll have to escape their search area, represented by flashing red and blue circle on your radar that expands more and more with each higher wanted level, which would not be too bad if it weren't for the fact that in GTA IV there's a cop or two or three on every block and almost every street, and whenever you're running from the cops they have a habit of appearing in the distance driving straight toward you just as you're about to escape the search area, resulting in the search area being reset and you having to start the chase all over again, which becomes quite tedious.

Gone are the joys of canning around town in cars with rediculous physics wiping out people, blowing **** up and outrunning cops all over the place, now the cops are everywhere and aren't going to let you get away that easy.

i accepted the invitation when they rang and then phoned them back a minute later to cancel and im almost sure i wasnt penalised for it (could be wrong but i went throughout the game without doing the friend thing at all and dont remember any issues).

i like the new direction it went in. for me san andreas was trying to be too many things at once whereas iv was much more streamlined with a more intimate world and a more coherent story.

I think you can get away with that once or twice and then they start penalizing you for that. There was that Jamacian guy i did that too often because i couldn't understand a word he was saying and I never got to do any of his drug side quests. So you don't have to go on dates but you also won't unlock more things to do in a rather straight forward game.

Here's the thing. These so called game reviewers will give any hyped game a score it doesn't deserve that is much too high. Then the PC Gamers (often the critics of gaming) will give games much less credit than they deserve - to create some sort of equilibrium. GTA4 isn't a 10/10. Hell, it's not even a 9.5/10. But it's a decent game. If you have nothing better to do, I'd recommend giving it a shot.

Everyone should just wait till they tried it really. It would be a shame if it was a good game but very poorly optimised.

ah ye little jacob thank god for subtitles. i must have done some then because i remember gettin guns off little jacob and roman givin me free taxis, not sure if they are the unlockables you meant. most of the time i remember cancelling plans with them and despite missing out on some sidequests i did enjoy the game a lot. tbh i thought it was a nice change to play along a storyline that was straight forward and didnt go off on all kinds of tangents (and get stretched thinner and thinner all for the sake of longevity) like san andreas seemed too.

True about San Andreas' story. It did start out like an urban John Singleton tale but then it went all over the place. I only remember the beginning in the Grove and the end battle, that 2nd half was just a mess.

Yeah, I bought SA a few years ago and enjoyed it a lot....well, that is, right up until the "plot twist" that took away all of territory that I controlled, and the mission where you had to learn how to fly the plane. The controls were so #$%@#! hard and awkward that I gave up and stopped playing. Haven't touched it since.

you could play online, which is a big part of the total package. And even if you are interested only in the singleplayer, the game can still be much longer than your average game without resorting to the things you mentioned.

I'd have to disagree with both of your posts. GTA IV upped the graphics, the story telling and characters, and the physics. Saint's Row 2's options and variety make GTA IV look like Pac-Man in terms of variety,

When crysis gets a 9.5 and at the same time Kevin V gives games lower scores than usual eg Fallout 3, you cant really tell if the game is good or not! I dont know about problems or auto aiming, or if its the ridiculous 9.6 on Gears of War that made you worry, But L4D graphics and sounds are not a 9 either, unlike IGN says, so i cant really say anything about the pc version or a bad port or controls and poor performance or graphics and psychics, so am gonna describe how the game really is: Unlike many simmilar games like scarface or just cause of true crime, this game actually has some quality in design, unlike mercenaries 2 too, however mercenaries 2 has alot of action destruction sequences and funny parts, But its crappy allrgiht, fun... IF you cant actually get passed its crappiness, GTAIV is very reallistic in driving and has cover mechanics with weapons loose accuracy, the wanted level is depending on how much visiblity you get, there are internet cafes in the game or even tv shows and internet and the ability to date girlfriends, or your cousin to call you and ask you to go bowling, LOL most missions are like drive there pick up someone ,go there...DANCE....I think you got the point , its like Grand Theft Normal boring life than action in missions, so yeah its kinda borring but not badly design, i mean mercs 2 is nice but i can hardly play that game, If you liked far cry 2 and assasin creed you probably gonna like this, if you however liked a game with a lot of action like crysis warhead or cod4.. i dont reccomend gta iv!

To explain it easier in gta iv i crash my car everywhere and i date girls and watch tv shows and take cover, in mercs 2 and saints row 2 i blow up anything while my character makes me laugh and i run around while shooting and driving fast as hell.....not reallistuc and experience some weird things...

in my opinion its ok i do have a good pc tho Q6600 2.4ghz 4GB 667mhz ram 4850 which is overclocked to 700 and 2.2 also have a Xi-fi xtreme music i got it on a 1280x960 res medium texture highest render quality and i think view distance is 40 detail distance around 80ish vehicle density 60% shadows 8 if i benchmarks i get an avg of 32FPS in game its very playable online and off more so than the xbox360 Few additional comments that will interest you: -i have noticed that some of the really high buildings have had doors put in place so you can teleport to the top -whilst using the mouse and keyboard in a helicopter it stutters badly also hard to control you can also notice this on foot but only very slightly (stuttering i mean) i would recommend using a 360 controller if you have one, easily swapped between K/M -also the helicopter the one with mini guns has had its damaged greatly increased compared to consoles where it took about 1 minute to take a car out now it takes a few seconds much more realistic and better!

ah ye little jacob thank god for subtitles. i must have done some then because i remember gettin guns off little jacob and roman givin me free taxis, not sure if they are the unlockables you meant. most of the time i remember cancelling plans with them and despite missing out on some sidequests i did enjoy the game a lot. tbh i thought it was a nice change to play along a storyline that was straight forward and didnt go off on all kinds of tangents (and get stretched thinner and thinner all for the sake of longevity) like san andreas seemed too.

smerlus

True about San Andreas' story. It did start out like an urban John Singleton tale but then it went all over the place. I only remember the beginning in the Grove and the end battle, that 2nd half was just a mess.

i loved the beginning of san andreas. loved it. when your brother gets locked up i was expecting jail breaks, blackmailing bent coppers to free him etc so we could continue to build our gang empire and what do i get? stealin combine harvesters from hillbillies then travelling to another city opening a garage with a hippy id just met. next thing i know im flyin remote control toy planes for some geeky kid thinkin what on earth happened to the story. was such a disappointment.

Dam, the net is ON FIRE with reports of how crappy this game runs on even UBAR hardware. I'm gonna wait for, like, maybe a year, then pick it up for five bucks at the K Mart bargain bin. Oh well. Back to Fallout 3 and WoW. :-)

that was the great thing about the older gta, it wasnt trying to be realistic(and failing like gta4) it was trying to be FUN and it was.
