Heyy!! I'm new to pc gaming and computer constuction!! I've just upgraded my old ex government computer with a video card and ram! I perchased my first game GTA IV but its only running at 5.8 fps! I'm having trouble diagnosing the problem, can someone please help! GTA IV benchmark test on lowest graphic settings: 5.8 fps cpu usage: 100% memory usage: 48% video usage: 45% My setup: cpu: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.80GHz - x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 9 RAM: 4GB DDRII Video card: MSI ATI Radeon HD 4850 DDRIII 516MB 256bit Hard drive 75GB - 56%free mobo: Acer Base Board G945MK BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG GBT - 42302e31 Windows XP pro service pack 3 Why is my fps so low?? Could it be the cpu? The motherboard??? (it's ex government) BIOS? (what the hell is bios anyway? is it important?)...Ive defragged, ended all other programs and 5.8 fps is the best benchmark score Ive gotten so far! Im suspecting it to be the processor but im only new to pc building/diagnosing!! am i looking in the right places? Any help please! Thanx in advance, take care, Gavin

i'm surprised that you haven't noticed that its your cpu yet. If it's running at 100% didn't it click with you that it could be that? anyways, this is a very hardware taxing game, unless you have a quad core cpu and a relatively high end graphic card, it won't run really well. p.s. what resolution and what settings did you set the game at, all these could also affect your performance.

also note that most celerons are meant to be low power, meaning alot of the time it will actually perform worse than a P4. The same is with semprons being lower power than Athlons.

That's right CPU. Celerons at 2.8Ghz are on par with 2Ghz pentium4 much of the time. They have half the cache. So it's really weak CPU. even a good single core will net you 10FPS on GTAIV. A dual get's you 20-25FPS if you got a good one and tris and quads arebest for the game.

It's mainly because the celeron isn't much of a performance cpu which games need to run well. I take it is a single core celeron based on the netburst core. GTA4 is also a very cpu demanding game and a poor port which doesn't help things. What settings are you running it on? turn everything to low and see if it makes any difference. That card can easily run a mix of medium and high settings with a decent frame rate.

it doesn't need a quad to run well, but it does need a good cpu.

Hi again Thanks for the replies! I was suspecting it be the cpu, but was hoping to be something cheaper!! ...yeah, every thing was on the lowest setings; res, tex, field, etc, etc About the quad vs dual core, you guys might fing the following link interesting: (GTAIV benchmark tests with 13 different cpu's) http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,669595/GTA-4-PC-CPU-benchmark-review-with-13-processors/Reviews/?page=2 "without quad-core power GTA 4 is noticeably less enjoyable. For example: A Q6600 is about 52 percent faster than the dual-core E6600 when both CPUs are running at 2.4 GHz" Looks like i'll be going down that route... what will I tell the misses?! .....? Thanks again crew, much appreciated, Gavin

Nice find, If you do go quad make sure you get one with the higher clock speed, for gaming a e8400 is much better than a q8200 but in some games a q9550 is better.

Hmmmm.... I think you better check what model of motherboard you have got, before you start buying new CPUs. It will be really frustrating and disappointing for you if you find your new CPU is not compatible with your motherboard. You also run the risk of damaging components if they are incompatible.

funny, this game benefits from CPU overclocks like nothing i've ever seen before. i have a ok dual core, the e7200, good for a budget cpu. at stock, its 2.53ghz, the game runs OK at medium settings, but lags and stutters a lot. i then bumped it back up to its usual 3.16ghz, and shazzam, i can turn shadows to high, reflection quality to high, and texute filtering to high while maintaining good framrates (usually above 28, which for me is totally playable). i've never seen a game that benefits from having a higher cpu clock as much as GTAIV. OC'ing my GPU has very little effect, its the CPU that does it all.

Hah. Lots of people dont realise what a difference a CPU upgrade can make. They all think itsmostly GFX card. It can be, but in some games, like this one, its equally as important. I remember when I upgraded my system last:

SYSTEM before upgrading: Athlon X2 4600, 7900GTX, 2GB RAM

UPGRADED Geforce 7900GTX to Geforce 9800GTX RESULT: 3DMark 2K1 from 24000 to 26000 3DMark 2K6 from 5500 to 8000

UPGRADED AMD X2 4600 to Intel E8400 RESULT: 3DMark 2K1 from 26000 to 56000 3DMark 2006 8000-13500

With that processor, you have luck that you can even run the game lol.
