Ok so i got everything turned up all the way besides shadows, which are on high not highest so i can turn up the view distance. Is there a hack so i can max everything all the way? i dont like this low view distance thing and most people know it limits you.

Get a 2gb video card? The game is heavily dependent on video memory, so it's impossible to fully max out the view distance unless you have that much to work with.

yes you can unlock the settings to max them out but if you have insufficient video memory you might get or i sould say you will get graphics errors and popping up textures. or low res textures that take quite a bit to load into high res normal textures

Don't do what darx55 suggested. You will have a lot of trouble with the game after that.

not necesarily,i could play at everything on high and silders on decent settings and it looked really nice, but it lagged like hell(because of my damn 3850...)but his gtx 260 should handle it pretty nicely

well a 3850 is terrible. even a 3870 couldent max GTA IV (and i dont mean in the memory part)

Actually shadows arent to taxing on the fps in that game. the draw distance is though. i have to have my draw distance around 33. and its not like my pc is a slouch either. its just a poorly made game that should really be able to run on the meagerist of gaming rigs.

back to gta4's poor optimization, I seriously think L4D2 has way better textures and it runs about a 1000000000 times better,

Uhm the game runs fine even with all the sliders maxed the only problem is there are random texture popups so i took the view distance to 50, they still pop up.. ehh i just need to find the point where they stop doing that

My game does that too and I'm running a new rig. i5/4gigs ram/xfx4890 and I still get some pretty bad pop-ins. I don't know, it might just be the game. This happend a lot with my Crysis too even though I maxed it with no FPS drop in either games.

-norestrictions wouldn't work for me. I used -norestriction, without the "s". I didn't need any other commands. Also, Windows 7 will use part of your RAM to make up for any lack in VRAM. It works perfectly, and you should be able to max out the game with the exception of shadows. That causes problems. I force Ambient Occlusion to make up the difference...

It's a VRAM problem. You don't have enough, and I don't either :\ I keep my VRAM usage below 1GB, just because I have 512MB G92's...

dude dont expect to get any good frames though cuz when i run it in max, (every thing set to max and sliders to 100 except viewdistance wont go farther than 60) i get around 20 fps with my 4870x2.

My framerates were smooth as butter with dual G92's when I maxed everything. I did get texture pop-in, but just because my cards only have 512MB of VRAM. His 260 will keep the framerates smooth, and will handle well over a gigabyte of VRAM usage in Vista/Win7...

Only card I'd seen that could actually 'max' GTA4 was one with 2GB of video RAM... given that it was based on a 9800GTX (IIRC) it wasn't very high in framerate, but it did have enough video RAM to allow all that stuff turned up. You would also need an assload of RAM, and/or probably be running ono a 64-- *looks at the signature* I see you already have most of that covered. In which case, get another 4GB of system RAM if you can, and find a strong video card with 2GB of video memory on it. If that doesn't do it, I don't know what else will.

Well, im kinda having the same problem as nearly anyone else, i benchmarked it at 49.5 fps, and the first 3 minutes of the game runs smoothly, then suddenly textures stops loading, and the world dissappears.

I was using the same card when i was playing GTA 4 same settings as you basically except view distance at 31. The Dev's released a list of the settings that are equivalent to what the consoles run at.

View Distance for consoles is (15) anything over 20ish and you shouldnt be able to really tell ie should be no popup on buildings, Traffic / Pedestrians will popup no matter what.
