you cannot have a MONSTER rig with that card.

your cpu should be just fine; might be of driver issues or your system needs some clean-up.

GTA IV is a really bad optimized PC port. Your PC is great, but you need more GPU power.

it has framerate dips, its just the game engine. Its a bit worse with ati cards for some reason, probably drivers. Its still much smoother than console, but noticeable less smooth than mostly anything else on pc.

Maybe if you had a 5870 gpu...or no, the game would still stutter with that card. The developers didn't spend any time optimizing it for PC.

it doesn't stutter with my 4890, and it runs like **** on console... Its just a bit of a mess, 100 million dollars spent and the game still comes off as amateur as far as performance/graphics go.

Gta is Cpu intensive. you have one of the fastest cpu's but still dont expect to play it at max settings ( i dont know anyone who can play it on max settings )

Also just for reference console settings are Resolution: 1280 x 720 @ 20 -30 fps

Texture Quality: Medium

Reflection Resolution: Medium

Water Quality: Medium

Shadow Quality: High

Render Quality: Low

View Distance: 21

Detail Distance: 10

Vehicle Density: 33

Shadow Density: does not exist on the Xbox 360

Definition: off

Vsync: off

I have a Q6600 and an 8800gt and i play at 1440x900 and i get 20-40fps at the following settings

Texture Quality: Medium

Reflection Resolution: very high

Water Quality: very high

Shadow Quality: High

night shadows:High

View Distance: 22

Detail Distance: 50

Vehicle Density: 48

Definition: on

Texture Filtering: Anisotropic 4x

Vsync: off

Also if your vga has only 512mb or less of video memory then forget about high textures ( which is sign of bad optimization since i have high textures on Crysis that look miles away than the high textures of GTA4 and yet i cant play GTA4 with high textures since it becomes choppy as hell)

Its a poorly coded to PC that needs lots of horsepower on the CPU side of things, more than whats available today if you want to run stuff high and max..

A monster rig would 2 480gtxs +, 2 5870s+, 2 295gtxs, 2 4870x2, 3 285gtxs, etc, and you need like a baseline of 4ghz on that I7 to be "monster".

i have everything maxxed out except for textures. they are medium. no AA. setting textures to high crashes my game.

the game runs at a good 30-40fps with occasional dips depending on time of day. This is a game porting issue not my pc.

game is modded for max peds/cars on screen.

rig is middle-lower range (i think)

q9300 quad at 2.25ghz

6 gigs ram (not great ram though)

Nvidia 9800 GT 330MB VRAM

Lol 5770 on a monster PC. GTA IV is hit or miss with most, some can run it well others with the same specs even get different results.

Wow, I joined this site just to vent frustrations on GTA IV. I'm a brand new PC gamer and I just built my first rig. My specs are: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition running at 3700 Mhz when I game MB: ASUS M4A78T-E GPU: ASUS EAH5770 CU Core PSU: Corsair 750 Watts Memory: GSKILL 4 GB DDR3 1333 Windows 7 64 bit This is my first ever gaming PC and I was on a small budget so I think I put together a pretty good rig yet my system can't run the new GTA 4 Stories at all. I do the benchmark tests and get an average of 40 FPS yet as soon as the game comes on it's lagging badly. I was able to get it to run smoothly one time but not at all since. My question since I didn't want to make a new thread is my PC going to be good enough to run other games on high or medium settings like Mass Effect 2 or Crysis? I did the Can I Run It crap and every game I tried I test all the way to the far right for fast PC. My windows scores are 7.4 7.4 7.5 7.3 5.9. Anyway what gives? Does my computer just suck?

Is there any reason to not have vsync on ? SAGE_OF_FIRE

Some people have found that having v-sync on either increases the loading time or just sends the loading screen into an infinite loop.

@ dougr05 - there is nothing wrong with your PC, looking at the specs you listed it is a perfectly capable machine and you should be able to play the vast majority of games very well. This should clue you in on what the problem is here and that is GTA 4 it is a horrible port on a technical level.

Now having said that you should still be able to play GTA 4 at much better settings than the console you just have to "lower your expectations" a bit and appreciate you are not going to get great framerates if you max the game out. If you keep your settings around medium/high, your view/details distance to under 50 then you should get "playable" framerates on your machine. This is for GTA 4 though I have heard that EFLC has come with a whole host of new problems that may or may not be fixed by Rockstar.

what resolution you're gaming at?

your CPU should be sufficient. CU core is cute and neat and all, but 5770 is still just a medium level video card; it's not going to take you very far at higher resolution (1920x1080 and up). also, it's Asus' design card, which might have some driver issues.

ME2 isn't that demanding, you should be fine with medium-high setting at 1680x1080; Crysis is totally different...tweak the configuration that can let you play it with acceptable framerate.

It was set at 1920/1080 and I tried tweaking with the setting every way, even lowering the resolution. You say it is a mid GPU that I have, that sucks because I thought I was getting one of the better cards. I thought the 5XXX series was better than the previous series cards and that there were only a couple better GPU cards available from ATI. Since I clearly know not much would buying a 2nd card and duel running the cards make my computer more of a top of the line system if it isn't now?

If you played before the latest patch, you would get a steady 60 FPS with everything maxed. But with the latest patch, even people with the best of PCs can't run the game as well anymore.

I have found the way to max out GTA 4!!!!

Build a time machine, go a trillion years in the future, steal on of those (futur high-tec) Nasa CPU pc's

And then, yes people, we can max it out and be amazed with its mediocre graphics.

humph, this sarcasm makes me sad because its true :(

every new generation of cards would improve somwhow, but the entry-mid-high scheme stays. for 5xxx series, only 5800s and up are higher end. basically now you have 5870 and 5970 as the top ATI cards.

crossfire 5770s might get you single 5870 performance, but not every game is scaled well for dual/multi gpu set-ups. all in all (cpu/gpu/ram) you have a mid-range rig, and so don't torture it by attempting to play newer games at 1920x1080 with high video configuration. go down to 1680x1080, its life will be easier.

it is a good card, you will be running me2 maxed at 60 fps constant. GTA iv is a bit of a mess on console and pc. Its playable though, even if the framerate suddenly does drop to 25ish fps at times. Rockstar has not optimized any game since gta 3 came out, it doesnt matter what platform or what gta, there is always framerate issues. Luckily on pc, a few years later you can usually play the games at great framerates while on console its always going to be the same.

Alright thanks for the advice I'll definitely lower the resolution then. I'll just have to tinker with the settings to get the best possible FPS I can.
