I just bought a new computer with these stats:

windows 7

i7 920 2.66 quad processor

6 gb ram

240 gts 1gb graphics card

i also have an xfx 8800 gts 640 mb lying around. just wondering if anyone knows which card is more powerful. should i leave the 240 gts in the computer, or install the 8800 gts instead? thanks for the help! ;)

Keep the 240 gts. Haven't really looked it up but I think it might be a rebranded 9600gt...

I think he will be alright for a while. I gave my dad a 9800GT 512mb and He can play the latest games like dragon age without a hitch. the 9800GT performence is very similar to the gts 240

the GTS240 is like the 9800GT? then he is alright. but its kind of a waste with the rest of his rig.

thanks a ton for the help guys! and yeah, the only thing i'd think of replacing any time soon is the graphics card, although i think i'll be fine with it for a bit. i can currently run crysis on high with a few options on very high pretty smoothly.

Do you have a link to show benchmarks of the gts 240, or something saying it is like a 9800gt?

More evidence of how moronic Nvidia continues to be in their re-branding schemes. It's an 8800gt 1gb.. Or wait, it's a 9800gt 1gb.. no.. we'll call it GTS 240 because we renamed the 8800gts 512 to a 9800gtx, then to a GTS 250. WTF?!!!!! Where they screwed-up was in naming the 8800gt and 8800gts 512 (original G92 parts). They SHOULD have been the 8900 GT and the 8900 GTS. It worked for the 7800-->7900 series conversion. G70 becomes G71. Smaller die, high clock speeds, faster part.. but not entirely NEW.

Alright, I'll stop. I could go on like this forever.

To the O.P.-- Keep the "GTS 240" in your machine. It will outperform the 8800 GTS 640mb.

the GTS250 is a rebranded 9800GTX+ with the 55nm technology.
