Well I bought a used gtx 460 for cheap that I was going to use in a dedicated folding rig, but I don't have the cash to build it right now. I also have an extra Asus p8p67 due to an RMA mix-up so I was looking at giving them to my brother for a new gaming rig.

I was looking at some benchmarks and was wondering if you guys thought that a gtx 460 is enough for 1080p. My brother is coming from a 8800gtx so there is no doubt that it will be a great upgrade, but if he is building an all new rig he will be getting a 1080p monitor aswell.

It would have been great, but sadly the regular asus p67 doesnt support SLI so he would be stuck with a single gtx 460. Basically seeing if I should just sell the 460 for cash for a better card or if it will be enough to get by for a while longer. Thoughts?

no its not a good card for 1080p. It will max many games out now at 1080p but its struggles with the heavy hitters like crysis and Metro 2033 you wont get away with playing games like that at 1080p with the settings turned up on a GTX460 Its a great card though imo. I just got done playing the BF3 beta and i was averaging about 40FPS at 1080P with all the settings maxed which apparently isnt ultra right now but high. This is with no OC and the 460 OC's great i could easily get better performance out of it. I dont have the latest drivers either so its not a bad card by any means just not a card i would suggest if you want to play all of your games in 1080p.

Seeing as the card is used prior to you owning it, it has now passed through 2 owners for a third. I wouldn't expect more then maybe $80 for it. If it was new or you were the only owner, $100-120. Let him use for a while, most games (with a good OC on it) the card will handle without much of a problem on high settings. The more demanding games - Metro 2033 for example - will require a push down in settings here and there. I'd keep it to use. It's just less money you have to spend on building his PC.

Yeah, this sounds about what I thought. Maybe I will tell him to just hold off on going to 1080p and just stay with his 1440x900 19" til he can get a better card. At the low res a gtx 460 should max everything, right?

A GTX 460 1GB is a good card for most games at 1080p. When I say that, I mean that he will be able to max out the detail settings in most games with some AA turned on, and will be able to run ANY game at respectable settings. Since those cards usually overclock very well, he can take it to another level by doing that.

Yeah, I had the card running at 850/1700/2000 at 1.025v stable so it is a pretty good OC'er. Hmm, its a tough call; with 1080 tn panels being so cheap right now...

Seems ok for me in most games, although going from 1440x900 to 1920x1080 playing Starcraft 2 forced me to lower a few settings :(

I use a 5770 which was a replacement for a 4870 that broke at 1920x1080p and for the most part it works great a gtx 460 1gb should have little problems running games at 1080p at decent settings and framerate.

Well my 460 1gb is doing just fine running games at 1920x1080, it is overclocked to the limit and it's not pumping 60fps with witcher 2 on full graphics but I don't have any problems with it.

Saying that I will be upgrading soon

My brother has a 460 768mb and it runs all his games very well in 1080p, but without any AA.

Pretty much this. And for $160, its a good deal.

I can max starcraft 2 out at 1920x1080p with my 5770 1gb and it doesn't lag unless its a custom map with a very large number of units of screen my cpu is a i7 920 though and rts are pretty cpu dependent.

Overclock it and run. It is about as good maybe a bit less than a 6870. It is pretty good at 1080p.
