just curious... :P

lol, thanks, but im building one for my bro.
and he wants an ultra-powerful system
what i have right now is:
Asus Sabertooth X58
cooler master haf 912
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W
12GB Corsair XMS3 @ 1600
i7 - 950
zalman 120mm 2ball Blue LED
WD Caviar Black 1TB 64MB Cache
budget is around $500 for GPU
yeah, just deciding on gpu now :P
Get Sandy Bridge instead. From what I've seen around the motherboards should be shipping again very soon. If you're willing to spend the full $500 then sure, get the 580, but I would still suggest the 570 over it.lol, thanks, but im building one for my bro.

I see 6950 going well under $300 after mir nowadays, and they go great in pairs. If they still unlock than the price/performance will easily blow the 580 away, Imo that card is overpriced unless you have the money to burn.
This. I wouldn't recommend SLi if you can get the top of the line single-GPU out there. Unless, of course you want multiple monitor setup with an Nvidia card.Go for the 580, there is no reason to go sli, if you have the money to buy the best gpu out there.

GTX 560 Ti's in SLI will walk all over a single GTX 580 in most situations. I would go that route. The only downside there is that you may need a beefier PSU to run 2 GTX 560's than you do a single 580. You should really have a high-quality 750 watt PSU to run GTX 560's in SLI.

I do nut think your brother is worthy. He shud challenge me in a game of CSS to see who gets the pc. I think that sounds like a fair deal
[QUOTE="-Wolfy-"][QUOTE="Liam00148"]From the rumors PAX 2011 March 11 590 is a dual card gpu, no? Like the HD 4870x2?lol, whens that badass being released?

Yeah its 2x GTX 580 Chips, But they're downclocked heavily for power consumption.
What's up with your obsession with challenging people to CSS? We get it you are a l33t CSS player.I do nut think your brother is worthy. He shud challenge me in a game of CSS to see who gets the pc. I think that sounds like a fair deal

I wouldn't if I were you. His kdr is 1337 and his W/L ratio is infinite.I dont get this. To all the people saying GTX 560 SLI, would you also recommend GTX 460 768MB SLI over a single GTX 560? I mean it just never ends does it? Owning a single powerful card is just something different then lower performing dual cards.
Theoretically GTX 460 768MB SLI will spank a GTX 560 and cost almost the same but that's not how we look at things now do we?
Well Gambler, some games do not support sli. We've seen the Crysis 2 demo fiasco where they had to release sli profiles to make it optimized for sli users. I like sli when it works, but if I could choose right now, I would rather go with a nice single-GPU. Bulletstorm is another example of no sli support at 1920x1200 resolution. I'm just sayin'. I think he should get a good GPU like the GTX 570 or 580 and if he wants to sli those, he can later if he chooses.I dont get this. 1GB is the magic number for VRAM right now in my eyes. I also feel that somewhere over 110gb/s of memory bandwidth is needed as well. I would NOT recommend that someone get a pair of 768mb GTX 460's over a GTX 560 Ti. I WOULD however recommend that someone get a pair of 560's over a 580.

Where do you get the gb/s from? But the VRAM thing is fair enough. So what about a GTX 570 and 6970? Both can be destroyed by GTX 460 1GB SLI and 6850 CF respectively at pretty much the same prices.

I got the memory bandwidth number from my personal experience when using AA/AF at decently high resolutions. That's where memory bandwidth is really key in almost any game. The more the better, but 110-115 gb/s is a good baseline.
I think that the mobo and PSU that you choose are key in choosing whether to go with 2 midrange cards in SLI/Crossfire or to go with a single high-end card. You can run a GTX 570 or 6970 on a good 550 watt or higher PSU in a mobo with a single PCI-E slot. You really need a good 650 (750 or higher preferred) watt PSU to run a pair of 460's or 6850's. You also need an SLI or crossfire mobo. The cost of ownership for SLI/crossfire is almost always higher than just adding the cost of the 2 cards together.
