Hi all, so I tend to game more on my PS4 but I use my PC for older, last gen games. My GTX 570 gave up the go and I need a replacement thats fairly cheap as I dont have a lot of money. I do have an old rig which I'll spec below. I just want something that is affordable and will perform as well as my 570 did. I'm thinking the GTX 960 would do the job and is fairly cheap. I know my CPU will bottleneck it but for now I dont care about that

Specs:

AMD Phenom X4 955

8GB RAM

Windows 7

750W Corsair PSU

RX 480. Don't go any lower than that. You can always throw it in a new rig after too if u decide to upgrade your CPU.

If you're just playing Old Games then the 960 is a great choice......

If you want to play all the latest games then "Affordable" just isn't going to cut it, you're going to have to sell a kidney to get a worthwhile card that will last.

Also have you considered AMD ? I like to try new stuff everytime one of my old Stuff Breaks ?

Ofcourse with that said, have you considered buying Pre-Owned ?

if you can wait a few weeks, the AMD rx 480 is the best thing. It'll cost less than the 960gtx but it performs somewhere between a 970 and 980gtx. Maybe even better, hard to know until people get a chance to benchmark it, but its probably more around the 980gtx in performance.

If you can't wait, i guess get a 960gtx, just seems like you would be throwing money away kinda with such a cheaper and superior card on its way. Problem is, this rx 480 card is so well priced they will likely sell around a billion of them the first day so it may be impossible to get one for a while.

You could look into used 970s and 980s, but honestly anything over 960 will be overkill for that CPU to handle.

Thanks for the replies folks, as I said, I use my PS4 for all the big modern games. I like to use my PC for the likes of Cities Skylines and last gen titles

You would be dumb to pick up a 900 series card from NVIDIA or 300 series card from AMD right now, as the new lineup from AMD comes next week.

The entry level RX 460 might be good for you, less than 50W and it'll be $120 for the 4GB model. It should give you better performance than PS4 and your old 570 of course.

@EducatingU_PCMR: Oh right thanks for that, I can't afford anything till next week anyway

However wouldn't it be slower than the GTX 960?

We don't know until we get the benchmarks. Speculation puts it around 960/380. It will definitely be better than your 570, which is what you're looking for.

yeah I'd check out the RX 460-480 once the benchmarks are out. Both are really cheap for GPUs and their speculated performance. IMO you will probably still see a benefit going from the 460 to the 480 despite your CPU, thanks to the GPU-centric nature of games now. I have a GTX970 and saw almost no change in performance when I upgraded from a Phenom II 965BE to a Skylake i5-6500 in most games (to me indicating that I wasn't particularly CPU-bound at 1080p)

As others have said wait for the AMD cards to release in the next week or two.

The 480x is looking to be faster than the gtx 970 while only cost $199 and the 470 is looking to be slightly slower than the 970 while only cost $150 (both options at 1080p would be giving you base settings very high with 60FPS on pretty much any game out there)

I'd say go ahead and get the rx480. I may sidegrade to one myself. Less heat and more oc headroom than my 290 reference.

Thanks everyone, I'll see what the prices are like when they release and make a decision from there

I may actually look at the RX 470 as that may just fit into my price range, though here in the UK we pay quite a lot of duty tax. If not then the RX 460 looks like a good option for me. I may well upgrade my CPU in the future, but just nothing to high end as I tend to use my PC for what I've stated above

If you only play last gen games, then a GTX 950 would be my recommendation. You can get one for about $125 new. If you can afford to get a GTX 960 for maybe $50 more, that would be even better.

If you're looking to play more current gen games, I would suggest an AMD RX 480 for $200.
