Hello, I am not that knowledgable in computer hardware so I was wandering which of the two GTX 660 or 7870 to get, I currently have a 5870.

I am choosing between:

http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-GDDR5-Graphics-11199-03-20G/dp/B007JCNOY6/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1353907167&sr=1-2&keywords=7870

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-PCI-Express-Displayport-Graphics-GV-N660OC-2GD/dp/B00942TK8I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1353907069&sr=8-3&keywords=660

On a side note, I think it will work on my system but if anyone knows I have the following:

  • Intel Core i7 860 (2.80Ghz/8MB/LGA1156/Quad Core)
  • Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 MB, intel P55, DDR3 2000, PCI-Ex 16, SATA3, USB 3.0, RAID, GbE LAN, 8CH Audio, 2oc PCB, SLI and Crossfire, Heatpipe, ATX.
  • Sapphire Radion HD5870 (850mhz), 1GB GDDR5, (2400mhz), PCI-E-2.0, DVI, HDMI, Display Port
  • Corsair 4GB Kit (2x8GB), PC12800, (1600MHz) DDR3, XMS3, 9-9-9-24, Dual Channel Kit
  • Asus DRW-24BIST 24xDVD-RW, 12xDVD+RW, 40xCDRW, SATA, NER08, SM
  • Western Digital 1TB, SATA-II, 7200RPM, 32MB cache
  • CoolerMaster CM 690, ATX, no PSU.2x USB2.0, tool free drive bays
  • Antec EathWatts 650W ATX Power Supply, 80 PLUS certified, 120mm low noise cooling fan, Dual 12V outputs, 2xPCI express, 4 x SATA, 6 x IDE

the 7870 is slightly faster, anywhere from 2-5% faster in most games. Both cards come with a free game promotion, pick the card that gives the game you like the best.

if he could do that then the 7970 is the card he should choose as its the fastest card on the market. The 670 is overpriced and needs to come down in price to where the 7950 is and the 680 needs to drop in price to where the 7970 is.

Yes true, but I personally would still go for the GTX 670 Gigabyte OC Edition which is a bit faster than the standard version and NVIDIA is more stable with drivers.

NVidia's driver stability claims is not supported.

I'm a fan of big jump upgrades. 5870 -> 7970+oc like mad = one happy camper I bet.

I don't think an upgrade from a 5870 is worth it unless you're going hard, like a 670, 680, or 7970.

would a 7950 be enough of an upgrade, $300 is really pushing the limits and the 7970 is in the $400's

Yeah I think in the long run you spend more doing incremental upgrades than going big or waiting to go big.

But I had to go from a 460 to a 560 Ti after my 460 started not working so I can't speak for myself.

I'd probably go with the 660, 7870 is a little more powerful but I think Nvidia tends to get a little more support with games and has more stable drivers. Plus you get Physx. On the other hand, the 7870 comes with Far Cry 3, one of the highest rated games this year (and a game I'm personally excited for), so I might go for that.

7870 and overclock it.

Or try and save up for a 7950.

I like nvidia's software so i'd pick 660, but performance between the two is very similar.

your statement about drivers is out of bias since you have likely never owned an AMD card before. There is no evidence proving that AMD drivers are inferior to nvidias drivers and I haven't experienced any driver issues with my 6950/7970. My steam library is 20 games long and growing. No matter how fast the 670 OC edition is, it is slower than the 680 and the 680 is slower than the 7970.

I've owned 3 AMD Cards and had problems with two of them (driver related), I also read these forums daily and lots of people have issues with ATI Drivers (mostly at launch of new games). The 670OC is as fast as the 680 Standard Edition.

Also catalyst software is not as nice as nvidia control panel for individual game settings, at least it wasn't when i tried using it on my sister's 6570 a few months ago.

One person who may or may not be telling the truth doesn't represent the millions and millions of satisfied AMD card owners. I have heard of geforce 590 gtx frying due to bad drivers and 8800 gtx cards failing all the time (oven baking). I find that most of the people complaining about AMD driver problems are those who want obscure features that 99.9% of people don't care about, like tearing in eyefinity setups or forcing AA through catalyst or having game profiles etc. I doubt that the issues that you had with your AMD cards prevented you from actually PLAYING the games, and for me thats all I really care about. I personally always go for the best bang for buck card even if I do prefer AMD. I used to own a geforce 460 gtx and then moved on to a 6950 to now a 7970. That is the difference between us, my bias doesn't stop me from buying the best of the best.

Lovely how you call me first a liar, then a biased person without knowing jack s*** about me. I told you I've owned 3 ATI Cards and had issues with them, YES, game issues where they would stop me from fully enjoying the game properly. If you don't believe that, good on you cause I don't care. But take off your AMD goggles for once and admit that ATI normally has more issues than NVIDIA (not saying NVIDIA doesn't have issues). Don't take this from me, just read the forums when new games come out and see the problems some people have. If you're happy with ATI, be happy, good for you.

Same could be said for nvidia cards you know. You wont see people without problems posting. I changed to a 6850 from a gtx460 due to driver problems at first and eventually gtx460 dying . I have owned both AMD and Nvidia cards and i'm quite happy with both companies. The only time when Nvidia does indeed have the advantage is in Sli configuration otherwise nowdays AMD driver support/stability is as good as nvidia. The only think i will give Nvidia over AMD on the driver front is better control panel with more options. Other than that both companies release drivers often and both companies offer stable drivers Besides have you seen benchmark of the latest AMD drivers ( 12.11 beta ). Anywhere from 5 to 25% performance improvements on 7xxx series card ( Bf3 especially at 20% improvement is great to see )

I am not looking to spend more than $300 that is really pushing it for me, so is the 7950 enough of an upgrade over my 5870?

Also is it likely to work/fit if my pc can run my 5870, my specs are listed at the start

Well there is a big performance difference between 5870 and 7950 but imo 5870 is still a good card and i would wait for AMD's 8xxx series for an upgrade if i was you. If you are not happy with the performance of 5870 then sure go ahead both 7950 and 7870 offer good performance improvements over 5870 and both will fit/work in your pc ( since you already have a 5870 is a safe bet they will be fine )

Both are good but for AMD i usually recommend Sapphire due for slightly lower priices since they are AMD's biggest partner

It looks as though the gigabyte has 2 extra fans, does this matter much? I currently have the sapphire 5870 and have had no problems

Correct. BOTH are great companies and BOTH have issues. I just generally see more from AMD, especially with newer games.... they eventually fix it with updates or tweaks, most of the time anyway.

[QUOTE="adamosmaki"][QUOTE="jhon9728"][QUOTE="adamosmaki"] Well there is a big performance difference between 5870 and 7950 but imo 5870 is still a good card and i would wait for AMD's 8xxx series for an upgrade if i was you. If you are not happy with the performance of 5870 then sure go ahead both 7950 and 7870 offer good performance improvements over 5870 and both will fit/work in your pc ( since you already have a 5870 is a safe bet they will be fine )

thanks, also would you recommend the Sapphire or the Gigabyte version? I don't currently overclock

Both are good but for AMD i usually recommend Sapphire due for slightly lower priices since they are AMD's biggest partner

It looks as though the gigabyte has 2 extra fans, does this matter much? I currently have the sapphire 5870 and have had no problems

I don't know about that Sapphire, but I always try to get cards that have 2 or 3 fans.
