Is it worth it do you think? or should I wait for the GTX590 to come down in price a bit?

I went from a GTX280 to a HD5850 to a HD6970 and thought it was worth it. So I would say a GTX280 to a GTX580 is a worthwhile upgrade.

GTX 570 gives roughly 2x the performance of a GTX 280. Even dual GTX 280s have troubles performing on the same level of a GTX 570 in a lot of games. Tack about another 20% performance increase on there for a GTX 580 and you should have a good idea of what to expect if you upgraded to either a GTX 570 or 580.

Nah, you should hang on and wait for the 6xx series by Nvidia, they'll probably pop up around early next year, and should be ready for BF3

Is the gtx280 to weak to play most games?

I would say no, the card still play games perfectly fine, Crysis and Metro hasn't been a reason to upgrade erlier under the years they've been around and not many games are more demending to run out yet so why would you exchange it right now?

Imagine getting the gtx580 and still play the very same games at the very same settings?, that is not a upgrade in my opinion, sure the framerate may be higher but is it worth it when you breeze thru most games as it alreay is?

ok, I'm upgrading for Directx 11, BF3 and more recently GTA4 mods. I've installed texture packs and icenhancer's mods for GTA4 and I want to run it a bit better. So in that case, it might be worth it. But 20% more doesn't seem right? . If I'm getting 25 fps in a game, I only get 5 more? if this proves to be true then I won't bother. Thanks for the advce.

Why wait for next gen, that's a long wait yet.

I was going to wait too, but I found GPU's very cheap so I just snagged'em up, no regrets. :)

You're already on old tech, why not get the 580, it'll still last just fine though the next gen. I doubt you'll have any issues running BF3 on a 580 regardless of what's out. Even then you can SLI later down the road when they're cheaper yet. (example of last gen: 480's are like $200-$225 now)

580 is substantially more powerful than 280. Not just 20%. But if I were you I would wait a bit for 590 price to drop a bit and then go for it. After all 590 is a dual GPU card and it will PWN anything else (in nVidia garage) One thing, though, make sure your case and PSU can handle it.

Oh, and if you decide to buy 580, try to get this one: http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N580GTX-Lightning-Xtreme-Edition.html It's the best one you can get. Here's a review: http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-geforce-gtx-580-lightning-xtreme-edition-review/

590=570x2 in SLI, So, yeah, 2x 580 will beat 590, but at much higher cost. (two GPU's, MOBO for SLI, better PSU...)

with more money comes more performance!! either 590 or 580sli both need atleast 750W psu. SLI mobos come cheap these day anyhow by the time you need another 580 (maybe within 1 or 2 years) the prices will drop alot.

If you're talking about my comment, I was referring to the GTX 580 being around 20% faster then the GTX 570 - not the GTX 280.

If you want to see the difference between a GTX 570 and dual GTX 280 cards in SLI then go here:http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147481

It's a benchmark I ran to compare older gen cards vs a new high-end card.

I recently upgraded from a GTX 280 to a 6950 and I found it to be a worth while difference. GTX 280 to GTX 580 is an even larger difference.

I'd believe it, I bought a 5870 about 4 months ago for $200 - I saw not long after that Newegg had the 5870 for $179.99 - 480gtx is slightly better but they were both the flagship single card from a generation ago.

gtx 480 performance is closer to a gtx 570, a $350 card.
