I am building a PC that will last for a good couple of years before I upgrade any parts, My question is on the GPU, Which performs better? I will be getting Crysis 2, Battlefield 3,etc.
Which card will give the best performance?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Either card will have zero problem maxing out Crysis 2 at extremely high resolutions (beyond 1080)since the game has been heavily consolized. T
ATM I think the 6990 edges out the 590, but Nvidia will definitely release some new drivers to narrow that gap. You really can't go wrong with either.
I usually recommend AMD but in this case I'd go for the GTX 590 simply because it is smaller. The card is a full inch shorter which allows it to fit comfortably in more cases. You can also expect the performance difference to close up a bit when nVIDIA release new drivers.
I would hold off on both (or at least hold off on the 590 for the moment) seems that a lot are running extremely hot. i

Well yeah. You have 2 GPU's on a 1 PCB with a single fan
If you buy one of these cards you should configure a custom fan profile and make sure that your case has excellent airflow. I don't see why you would put one of these in a sub-par case anyway.
Each card, performs better than each other on different games.
From benchmark's and reviews, the 590 blew away the 6990 on one of the game on your list (Crysis 2).
It all depends on the game you play, but both are pretty close in terms of performance. Although I must give the nod to the GTX 590, quieter and smaller.
6990 uses less power consumption, but not by much. Also some say, it run's a little bit cooler, in sacrifise of sounding like a truck.
the 6990 is a bit stronger. But neither card is great. I think the 6950 1gb takes the cake for the best value card since if you overclock it, it is neck and neck with the 580 gtx, while costing less than $250
neither. the 590 seems to brick (as in catch fire) if OCed, and generally goes somewhat hot.
The 6990 is really big, really loud, and nearly as fryingly hot, aswell as somewhat sketchy in its performance.
its the usual dual gpu debacle with both of them, they are ONLY good as long as good drivers are made and updates, sofar neither have been able to do that by a long stretch, they both are too hot for me to want one in my PC, and thier performance while not bad, is not hat anyone was hoping for.
The general consensus sofarseems to bethat both dropped the ball on the dual gpu cards... again...
Ofcourse we will have people who are supporters from both manufactors that will say "its not that bad" but every test made sofar from the sites I tend to trust (that I know does not support one compnay or the other) both seem to say that while they are generally good cards, they are dissapointed.
Can you put two 6990s on crossfire or two 590s on SLI? robertoenrique
yup, you can, and that is the only saving grace with both, since cheaper midrange cards from both companys in crossfire or Sli, tends to run cooler and perform the same or even above.
The two dual gpus can run in sli and crossfire, but you look at something like a 1400$ pricetag, and I dread teh heat buildup in such a setup, unless you have some serious cooling.
It would likely just about kill any gamethat gets thrown at it for some time farwards tho:P
LMAO.. Who would invest in such a monster of a PC? Anyways the CPU in such a build should be clocked at around 4GHZ+ in order to avoid a bottle neck. robertoenrique
Says the guy with 6970 CF...
The 590, from what i have seen there is little difference but the 590 is not as load as the 6990. If noise isn't an issues flip a coin
i would spend 500 dollars on two 2gb gigabyte 6950s cards and unlock the shaders to 6970 on both and do crossfire. Youll get as much performance even a bit more than 6990 as far as im concerned. I guess two seperate cards dont overheat as much but i could be wrong.
[QUOTE="adam0926"]Exactly what I plan on doing! Flash the to 6970's though :) via BIOS updateneither crossfire 2 6950 2GB and it will match and beat both for allot less
