Your character can only travel to other worlds if you have that version of Guild Wars on your account and installed. For instance, if you have regular Guild Wars and your friend has Nightfall, you cannot visit each other under any circumstances. However if you both had Nightfall then you could.

You'll still be able to see each other at the Great Temple of Balthazaar, which is where the majority of the PvP takes place.
