My guess is that they had a dillema on whether to make episode 3 on the same engine or screw it and make HL 3 along with a new engine...now they're probably working on going on to making games with a new engine.

They're so rich they can afford to troll their fans.

I would do the same!

They failed hard with HL 2, they turned it into episodes because they wanted to release it all, constantly, every year, while focusing on quality. My guess is that they're ashamed of this and I doubt they'll be making an Ep 3, because the reaction would be "oh, it's awesome, but several hours? we waited years for this?", so they're making a lengthy Half Life 3.

If you really cared about Valve one bit you wouldn't be so hard on them, at least if you knew how difficult development is. My guess is there is no Episode 3, but rather Half-Life 3. It only makes sense at this point; and you know what? We should be willing to wait till at least 2012 for Half-Life 3. Regardless, I don't feel that being so demanding and self-entitled gets us anywhere.

I am going to be supporting Valve in the future regardless of if it is for Episode 3 or HL3. I do have to say though, I think it is just cruel to gamers to have such massive cliffhangers with NO PLANS for an immediate follow-up. Its not only games that do this. I remember several recent TV shows that do this too and then get cancelled between the time that final cliffhanger ends and when the next season was supposed to start. So, these people make the choices for the cliffhangers without definete plans for the future. I only wish these people that makes stories and keep us entertained did it a little more resonsibly...

I am just gonna go ahead and say it snce someone has. They are going duke nukem's direction. Right now they cant think of any way to make it better and superior that the other fps outhere. So just like the duke nukem developers did, they put it on hold till some cool ideas and inspirations arise.

I know what you mean! Heroes got cancelled on the biggest cliff hanger of the entire show. Claire had just shown her powers to the TV networks and the "heroes" were going to be revealed to the world, Then it got cancelled

Hence, why we call it "Valve time."

People could just as easily get mad at Blizzard for this same 'when it's done' philosophy, but it seems to be only Valve that takes flack.

They owe you nothing, be grateful that they've given you Half-Life, the Source engine, fairly price games like The Orange Box, free DLC and frequent updates, and a digital distribution service that is the pinnacle of online distribution.

Have patience.

I agree that there will be no episode 3. I think Valve will come out all guns blazing with Half Life 3.

I agree, I think it'll be HL3. Valve is due for a new game engine.

I'm actually more excited at the prospect of a new Valve game engine than I am of HL3 lol.

Source is probably the best game engine ever made. It runs even on crap hardware from 2003 while still looking good at low settings. It is well optimized, has a great SDK, and the ability to upgrade with changing times. FPS to RTS games can be made on it... it's brilliant.

5 years for Half-Life 3? No thanks on that. Half-Life 2 came out in 2004, so I would like Half-Life 3 some time in the next 3 years.

I think Valve has a ton of things in development we dont know about so its hard to speculate on why its taking so long. For example how did Valve fill the gap left by the Turtle Rock team going off into casual gaming, and what (if there is one) is the new team doing. It cant be L4D3 after the L4D2 controversy.

So many people in this thread are saying that they expect a full-fledged Half-life 3 instead of just HL2: Episode 3. I remember a time 12-18 months ago when I was part of a discussion just like this one on these forums, and almost everyone said I was crazy and/or stupid for thinking that they were really working on HL3. Now it seems the tide has turned and more people are thinking like me. Funny how that works.

I wouldn't have called ya crazy. :P I've been thinking it too. It's about time for a new engine and what better game to present that engine to the world with other than Half-Life 3? :)

I wouldn't call you crazy for it, but back then it was just plain old speculation. Hell, even now it is. Truth is, we don't know. I'll admit, that long ago I expected Episode 3 instead of HL3, as the original plan was to release a trilogy of episodes, but now it seems really unlikely and pointless to release a Half-Life expansion using the Source engine, especially since it's been so long. I also doubt Valve wants to waste their new engine on an expansion pack to Half-Life 2. If anything, they want to show case their new engine with Half-Life 3. We'll see though... bound to hear something from Valve sooner or later.

I wouldn't put it past them to release an Episode 3 for the Source engine, and then release Half-life 3 pretty quickly afterwards, featuring their new engine.

And i for one would be perfectly happy with that!

i don't think they would just suddenly make a switch to HL3. i think HL3 has been under development for a good time already.

i do hope however, that EP3 development was stopped/delayed to focus resources on HL3.

The only thing that has me worried is that there isn't even a mention of HL2: EP3/HL3, so going by Valve Time it will be at least another 2 years after they first announce it before its released.

I do not know about you guys but I am really frustrutated, obsess, and feed up about the time Valve takes to add a sequense to the game. Are they just a bunch a guy who cannot get their act together to generate revenue? A gang of nerds who just waiting for the next toy? They just do not understand how much momentum they loosing...

softgad60

Their Left for Dead series has been a success...and the Steam distribution is paying off big for them, so I have a feeling HL is on the back burner....remember when they said going episodic would allow for sooner release dates...that seems to be the problem now...That statement hasn't held up...Agree with the previous posters about going new engine HL3...the tech has just advanced so much...But I must admit, I'm caring about the HL franchise less and less as each month passes by...

Putting Half-life on the back burner in favor of making Left 4 Dead games is horrible.

they've done a lot this year. two dlc's for l4d2, constant updates for tf2 (including a couple HUGE ones), a few pretty big updates for cs:s, weekly mutations in l4d2, release of alien swarm, more expansions of steam and such, multiple updates for hl2/ep1/ep2/portal, and also, they working on portal 2 (among other unannounced titles lurking around on their networks). valve is a huge company and they should be able to work on our half-life 3 while releasing those great updates and stuff, but still; they've done more than i could ask for just this year. adding hundreds upon hundreds of hours of accumulated gameplay to all of their games this year is more than enough for me. next year, i dont expect anything less. while they arent releasing episode 3/hl3, they are making up for it in other departments. and who says hl3 isn't less than ~2 years away? it could very well be released at almost any time from q1 2012 onward. if you get a little antsy, replay hl, hl: of, hl:bs, hl2, ep1 and ep2 consecutively. that settled my nerves.

Releasing updates and DLC for existing games that didn't really need them is a weak excuse for not having HL2- EP3 done and released by now. It should have been done in 2008, or 2009 at the very latest. I'm sick of opening Steam and seeing that half my games are doing a friggin' update 2 years after I downloaded them last.

I do hope that if / when they do release Hl2: Ep3 or a HL3 that it wont be a big disappointment. I'm eagerly awaiting and have huge anticipation for the future of half life, I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a badly made 4 hour game. I have a feeling tho we possibly might hear something about it when Portal 2 is released.

The Portal games are set in the Half-Life universe, and we know that Episode 3 will involve Aperture Science in some way, so I'm thinking that Portal 2 will be containing a fair few hints as to what to expect in Episode 3. Hell, I'd bet that they need to release Portal 2 first, to set up the story for the next (final) HL2 game.

So I'm certain that they'll reveal Episode 3 after Portal 2 is out - if they announced it any earlier, they'd kill all of the hype for their upcoming game.
