Buy half life one over steam and wait for the orange box to come out. I bought the holiday pack which cam with hl, hl2, hl2 ep 1, CS:S. So if I get the orange box I get two extra games:(

Half-life Anthology and Counter-Strike Anthology is just a compilation of the various Half-Life games (yes the 1998 version), and some patches I think. Just read the reviews for each of the games that it comes with. Only Counter-Strike, Half-Life: Deathmatch and Team Fortress have network-only gameplay.

If you buy the cd's from the store, you'll still have to install steam and create an account. When you start installing the game from the cd's, steam will want an key code you off the box you purchased. The game will install to about 90%-95% off the cd's and the last little bit will be downloaded. I don't think you'll have a problem with a slow connection.

Only to activate the game, which usually will only take several minutes. Afterwards, you can use Steam in offline mode, and not have to be connected to the internet.
