Just finished Deus Ex for the first time ever.....amazing game. SS2 is no doubt a great game, but I only got so far in it, now I can't get it to play on Vista.

Go with Deus Ex, slow beginning, but great game.

Speaking of classics, i just started Planescape: Torment again, it does work on Vista, nice!

Both are great, but Deus Ex is the better game. Go for that one.

three reasons - 1. depending on your OS, it may take a small bit of tweaking to play SS2 (LINK) so get it out of the way first (and have a good laugh at how 'consolized' BioShock is by comparison). 2. Dark Engine may seem more dated than Unreal Engine. 3. Save the best game for last!

Deus Ex - it's aged better and would be more accessible.

I would say SS2, it is older, so you will appriciate it more if you play that first, instead of Deus ex first, then youll notice some shortcommings.

Both of them are freaking amazing tho, and share an uncanny amount of game mechanics, you could almost be tempted to think they were made by the same people... They were not.

SS2 is one of the best FPS/RPGs, ever... Fun, creepy... good puzzles

Deus Ex was a great game, but SS2 is better; assuming you aren't a graphics whore

I'd play SS2 1st, then DX, because DX is substantially better-looking and solid. Personally, I liked DX better, so I'd start with the worse one first. That way SS2 won't depreciate in likeability.

to get ss2 to run, run it in win 98 compatibility mode (xp may work too), also you need to minimise it when you boot it up the first time, and disable any more then 1 core in your system for this game... (you wont disable your cores, the game will jsut be placed into 1 core).

Also patch the game... if you do that itll run just fine.

System Shock 2. This kind of choice really comes down to what you look for. I love the political intrigue of Deus Ex but it lacks the strong atmosphere System Shock 2 created. I felt alone and confused as I pieced together what happened until the very end where it all comes together (to not spoil it ;)) perfectly.

You should play Deus Ex because you won't be able to get System Shock 2 to run on your PC. I tried for weeks then gave up. I'm hoping it is re-released one day with Vista support.

more like part of FAILnet if you use vista, stop crashing.... damn they plan to control by simply making us give up the fight thanks to the desperation we get every time our system crashes.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOh6Nh8w6f8dakan45

then i guess we are all wrong and you guys are the "right ones" welcome in a world that everything is incorect and everyone is an error, hope you suffer from pc os issues and pc gamming bad ports as much as i do because everyhing is wrong and incorect in this world regarding the pc gaming...where is half life deus ex and system shock 2?

dakan45

link

Dakan45 im really confused here? Do you like Vista or despise it? It seems as though you can't get Deus Ex to work in one post, but it seems as though you were succesful. How did you do it?

Maddie_Larkin
IIRC, Warren Spector and a few other people worked on both games, though they are different development studios. (System Shock 2 = Looking Glass Studios, Deus Ex = Ion Storm Austin, which was comprised partly of ex-LGS staff and should NOT be confused with Ion Storm Dallas, responsible for Anachronox, but more infamously, for Daikatana.)

System Shock 2.

I'm inclined to agree. The only exception to that rule thus far for me is Star Control II, which I played in UQM 0.4.0 form sometime around 2006 or so. It must speak volumes for a game originally released in 1992 to hold up like that, especially after having played Deus Ex beforehand. It also took me a while at first, but in my top five greatest games of all time list, I put Deus Ex (formerly #3, now #2) above System Shock 2 (formerly #1, now #3), simply because I find the former a bit more replayable. System Shock 2 had a lot of charm when I played it back in 1999/2000, but when I went through several years later with the intent of completing it, it lost some of that charm-partially because I knew EXACTLY what was coming. The same could be said of Deus Ex, but I'd say it hurts System Shock 2 more because of its atmosphere (which partly relies on general terror with a few OH CRAP moments). Anyway, to get to the point: System Shock 2 first, if your system isn't so new that it gives the game fits. (I recommend keeping an old Win9x gaming computer around for finicky titles like this.) Then get cracking on Deus Ex, which shouldn't give you too much fuss. (There are even renderer patches that can make the game look a bit better, or at least make better use of newer hardware!)

Irony is (looking at your name), Metroid Prime for the GC would be one of those games that would not dissapoint after Deus Ex IMO. Both Masterpieces, but Prime for me is one of the greatest games ever made, Deus ex close but just a tad below.

This is what every PC gamer should do.

If you have at least two PCs, one from around 1998-2001 that has Windows 98 (and preferably a 3Dfx card) and another new PC with XP (not hating on Vista, but it's a fact that XP is more compatible with games, especially with older titles.) then you can pretty much play all PC games in existance. With the exception of certain FMV games made for Win 3.1. If you're really hardcore you should also have a DOS PC with a good soundcard, though DosBox can be a decent substitute.

--

On topic, I'd say you should play System Shock 2 first. The feeling it leaves you is more depressing (in a good way) and isolated... Then afterwards play Deus Ex, it gives you an epic feeling. Both are truly amazing games, and I'd also recommend the Thief games to you, since they are in many ways similar.

Have you tried the -lgntforce trick?

Also if all else fails, install it on a PC with Win98 then copy the folder via LAN or USB flash drive or something - it works, as long as you have a no-cd patch (like the one in the Kolya's System Shock 2 tool, which you should download in any case.)
