Hey guys,

My old pc had two hard drives

Q6660
ATI 5850
8gb Ram
IDE Hard Disk Windows XP
SATA Hard Disk Windows 7

IDE Hard Disk lasted 6 years, still works great.

SATA one failed after a year or two, by failed i mean alot of bad sectors, windows would lock up and operating system would no longer be present.

I replaced the SATA WD one with another. 1.5 years later it fails.

I replaced it again,,,,same thing after a year.

I don't know what it is, i figured no point in diagnosing it im getting a new pc anyway, i bought a new computer recently and moved my hard disk there,

2 Months in, hard disk fails.

I get a Seagate this time,,,and it crashes after a week.

I can't figure out why these hard disks keep failing.

Any ideas?

It's unusual to have so many failures, as the chances of getting that many bad disks in a row is really small. The fact that you have changed your PC and still having issues makes me think it could be something else in your room near your PC - have you got a large speaker or amp close to your PC? I knew someone at uni that had his guitar amp / speaker next to his tower which ended up screwing the harddrive. Is your new PC a complete new PC, or using some existing bits from the old one? Thinking possibly power supply?

This was my first thought, unstable voltage can cause really weird problems.

.............................. I have no comment.. my 120 WATT guitar amplifer is by my computer. Well i'd say its about 3-5 feet away though. Although it's rarely on anymore. Power supply was different on both computers. The only common denominator was the sata cable i was using. Just replaced it. But i doubt thats it, can't be that easy can it(trying not to get my hopes up). The other common denominator is the power cord extension, could that be it? I don't know guys, at this point i'm trying anything.

Edit: The amp has two huge magnets by the speakers, but it's really 3-4 feet away, is that not far enough?

Not to mention the thick case of the amplifer and the case of the hard drive.

What kind of power supplies do you have? Sure it could be some really far fetched environmental thing in the room, or maybe you just keep buying cheap/crappy power supplies.

Try another SATA cable.

failed Wd drives? sorry to say but that sounds like notthng new. go on new egg and see the many reviews on Wd bllack drives and blue drives. i bought a 750GB drive brand new and it died 2 months later. just get a carbonite account and auto back up your files so you dont have to worry about that.
