Considering a 300gb HD only costs around $60, that would be a good size to start with.  Plenty of room for games and other stuff.

Yepp 300gb should be more than enought for just gaming. You would be fine with 100gb but I'd recommend at least 300gb since they are cheap and you might want to use your pc for more than just games.

I'd say as big a drive as you can afford.  That huge amount of hard drive real estate can get filled up pretty quickly given how large some current games are... and they are only going to get larger.  I'd say 300 Gb would be the minimum.

So far what everyone has said has been fine. However the better question you should have asked is what speed HD should you have. The answer to that would be as fast as you can afford. The person who first mentioned the 300GB for $60 failed to comment that it would be a slow HD. That would be fine for data storage but poor for gaming. Try to find something sporting at least 7200RPM with about 100GB.

 like svk said you need to look at the speed first. and then buy a size that you think you will need if you are only gonna have a few games you will probably be alright with 80gb for awhile. just keep in mind that you can always have multiple hardrives so when you need more space you can just get another one, the only thing you would have to worry about adding more hdds would be your pc temp going up, but it most likly be enough to affect your preformance.

I've got a 250Gb drive at the moment, and I've just filled it (had to take some stuff off to try some game demos).  Admittedly it's not just used for games, but I've got about 80Gb of installed games and at least another 35Gb of game related data (demo installers, patches, map packs, mods - it soon adds up).  With modern games taking up more and more space (NWN2 takes up 6.4Gb on its own), I'd say 300Gb is the bare minimum you'll require currently if you start building a game collection.  If you want some future-proofing, I'd go for 500Gb.  And yeah, you need a minimum of a 7200 rpm drive, preferably with a decent amount of cache memory and a good seek time.  Also ensure you get the right type of drive to suit your motherboard connector - SATA, SATA II etc...

I should guess that most people who are regulars on gamespot would have at least a couple of hundred gigabytes.

Personally, once I get my new HDD in a couple of days, I'll have about 1.5Tb.....and I need every byte of it!
