I just finished playing Legend of grimrock and it was quite masivelly hard, I don't think I would have been able to coplete it without the walkthrough, so it inspired me to make this post. Other hard games I played and copleted:

  • Blood Omen 2
  • Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
  • Far Cry
  • Lugaru HD
  • Condemned: Criminal Origins
  • Hotline Miami

Yes, Far Cry on the higher difficulty settings is for the masochistic. I remember completing it on "Challenging" and having a very hard time completing many of the game's missions.

Rainbow Six: Raven Shield was extremely hard as well.

Super Meat Boy for me. It starts out pretty easy but the difficulty ramps up fast. Then, there's all the extras not associated with simply completing the level, like bandages or speed runs.

The Witcher 2 on hardest difficulty is one of the hardest games around. Once you die you're dead, have to restart the entire game and the battles are stupidly hard.

Though I usually hate playing games on higher difficulties as they become cheap instead of a skill based challenge. So to that I would say Dark Souls

Jagged Alliance 1 and 2. I've played other hard games, but this was the best hard game i've played... but it was too hard at time. Really you couldn't play beyond Easy mode or expect to really suffer.

At the hardest difficulty setting on the original Far Cry, I managed to make it to the Labs. That was it. The Crygens were too much for me.

Been a long time since I played them but Battle Isle 1, 2 and 3 have stuck in my head as being incredibly hard games. Mostly due to the AI being given a large mount of trops to start with. After you got through the intial first few turns (the hard part) it got somewhat easier because the AI was rather thick.

Street Fighter III 3rd Strike. But I learnt the game the hard way playing semi professional players for over two or three years. And these were people who have been playing the game for ten years or more. I got bested every day for many months until eventually I got to the same level of skill.

Demon Souls so far. Dat Flamelurker.

soolkiki

Yeah, the PC version of Demons Souls was particularly difficult to beat since it doesn't exist. :P

The original Xcom games were pretty insane for me, even on the easiest difficulty levels. The SSI "Goldbox" Dungeons and Dragons RPGs were all pretty tough.

The Zork games were difficult to the point that their design would be considered "broken" by modern standards since you could screw up in the first five minutes of the game and not realize that you can no longer beat the game because of your screwup until the very end. Actually, not just Zork. Any Infocom text adventure was damned near impossible without a guide.

The original Kings Quest game was also pretty tough since any misstep resulted in your death.

X: Beyond the Frontier was also stupidly tough. It dropped you in the middle of an unknown universe in a ship with a sh!tty laser and a main character that's already in debt.

Short answer is: any old game. If the hardest game you can think of is the original Farcry then you haven't been gaming that long.

That's really snide and uncalled for. Check your attitude at the door.

As some people said Dark Souls is pretty tough, but really rewarding to play. (Having beaten it twice on 360 before getting the PC version I don't have much trouble now).

I picked up FTL yesterday and sunk a ton of time into it. The permadeath and constantly advancing rebels really ratchet up the difficulty (and fun).

Someone said the Witcher 2, which I agree with. I did a playthrough on Dark mode and it took me an hour to beat the first fight (but once you get the lifesteal weapons it's a breeze).

Another one I'd say is very difficult, but not in the conventional sense, is SpaceChem. I've spent 4+ hours tweaking a single design to solve their puzzles. Neat little game, especially appealing to those with an interest in chemistry (like me).

Under no circumstances will I do that. The last time I did the girl working the door lost my attitude even though I had my claim ticket. Next thing you know, I'm out a $500 tailor made woolen sports attitude.

Yes, I'm such a jerk for calling myself old.

My point still stands. There is nothing that has been released in the last 10 years that even compares to the old classic PC games in terms of difficulty, but as I alluded to in my original post that's not necessarily a bad thing because these games were often difficult to the point of being what would be considered "broken" by modern design standards.

I definitively sense a moderate amount of douchebaggery coming from Byshop. I mean sure you can have your opinion (and it's probably right) but the way you present it is really arrogant, just like bonafidetk said, you are being a jerk about it.

You've called me names in two posts so far and I haven't retaliated in kind, yet you insist that I'm the jerk. You'll pardon me if I find that kind of hilarious. The games I'm talking about are old enough that there's a fair chance that they came out before most of the people on this thread were even born. Farcry came out about a decade ago, whereas the games I'm talking about came out over three decades ago. If your experience only goes back as far as Farcry, then relative to the span of PC gaming as a pastime you haven't been gaming that long. That's just math. If you feel like this statement wounds your nerd-pride, that's your problem. And my point, that I'll now make for a 3rd time because you apparently somehow missed it the previous two, is that games of that era were on an entirely different scale in terms of difficulty because there were no pre-established standards in game design. Instant death, no continues, saves or retries in many games, and obtuse puzzles to the point of being insane were the norm in some games, and this was also before you had the internet as a resource you could rely on. I have literally never met anyone who beat Zork III without outside assistance because the game tells you virtually nothing about what it is you even have to do to win. Today you couldn't get a game like that put out because by modern standards it would be considered broken and unplayable. -Byshop

The special levels in Medal of Honor: Underground (I still remember the names: Where Beagles Dare, Rotten to the Corps and Panzerknacker!). But that is not on PC

Tekken 3 on hardest, but that is not PC.

Metal Slug with limited lives... not on PC as well:@

Personally Beyond Divinity and early WoW.

Actually they released all the Metal Slug games on PC in 2010 so you're good there.

I hadn't considered MMOs, but following the theme of my previous posts I would have to say the original version of Ultima Online. When that game was in beta/initially released it was stupidly hard because they hadn't yet implemented any of the modern balance concepts in MMOs like limiting PvP or the ability to loot player corpses. If you got killed in a crowded area, by the time you got back to your corpse to retrieve your gear everything you had on you would be gone and someone would have cut your body up for jerky.

Of those, I've played all the King's Quest games plus other Sierra games and some of the SSI D&D. The only Infocom game I've played is Alice in Wonderland (Amiga) which is a text adventure with some pictures.

Back in those times, I was deep into wargames like Kampgruppe and Red Lightning plus RPGs like Sentinel Worlds (sequel to Starflight).

I figured none here would remember those (along with most Amiga games). So, I went with something closer to home like Far Cry.

Ooooh, Sentinel Worlds. I actually have a copy of that new in a box around here somewhere. That's another classic.

KQ3 was a particular PITA. There were so many ways to screw up with the wizard and get yourself turned into a rat or something.

The Zork games in particular were basically impossible except through a mind numbing about of trial and error. Infocomm's detective game Deadline had a linear time progression, too, so if you took too long you could miss windows of opportunity and screw yourself without knowing it. The game was also filled with false leads.

Far Cry was a pain in the ass even on the lower difficulties.

Some of the Ghost Recon games were pretty difficult.

Many games mentioned here is this topic are not hard, they just require some replayability and/or a great knowledge about the rules to manage to beat them. Everybody who knows how to play an instrument understands what i mean, it's impossible to be at least decent at playing piano on the first try. SMB is indeed a chalenging game, but with some practice anyone can finish it. Just try, fail, and play it again. However, some games like Farcry and Dark Souls are truly some pain in the @$$. :)

Pool of Radiance (the goldbox version) is actually one of the first RPG's I ever played...personally I think Dark Souls is MUCH harder than it. PoR was probably among the hardest of the gold box games as well...I thought Secret of the Silverblades and Dark Knights of Krynn were a lot easier for instance.

Maybe because I played PoR first the other two were easier...regardless even at 7 years old I didn't think any of the games in the gold box series were extremely difficult.

By contrast, I think Dark Souls would have kicked my arse at 7 years old.

Pools of Darkness was the toughest Gold Box game. Good luck with the end of it if you didn't have a very well planned out party.

Wizardry 8, Ironman mode, with the difficulty cranked all the way up.

What about Wizardry 4 ?

Also, has anybody ever beat the Ultima-like game DEATHLORD ? Never came across anybody that has yet.
