Hey there. :) I'm really not an expert on PC hardware, but I've decided to build a PC gaming rig based on an Intel Core i7 940 processor and two nVidia GTX 285s in SLI. I'm wondering what would be appropriate motherboard, PSU, cooling, and case selections - considering the possibility that I may want to overclock as well. I'm sure I can easily figure out optical drive / keyboard / mouse / monitor on my own. I'm sort of at a loss as to where to start with the hardware I mentioned though. Thanks for any advice! Peace.

dont get an i7 940... really not worth it when u can just overclock for free. and if u have a microcenter close by, u can get an i7 920 for 200$

Or go with AMD and the Phenom 2 and save even more money while keeping the performance, and using that extra money on something else on the rig.

Exactly. Im using an amd 955 oced to 4.0 and i7 cant touch (good friend of mine has an i7). As for video cards, it would be better to just get on gtx 295 becuase a lot of game dont support sli.

Dude If I was you I would wait till the end of the year, alot of new stuff coming out, new GPU and Intel will release i5 which should be abit weaker than i7 but the price would be much better I think. ATI will also release the 5000 series in 3 months which will perform better than gtx285. Also its better to get a single card solution for the GPU thats why I would just wait a coule of months till next gen cards come out.

But if you want the best now just go with what you plan. I don't know alot about i7 mobos so can't really help ya there. I am sure someone with more experience will give you advice. Go with good named brands such as Gigabyte :)

Thanks for the replies. Hmm. Pretty sure I won't be able to afford my gaming rig till the end of the year anyhow, so I'm glad there will be some better hardware by then.

ATI will release the 5000 series in october while Nvidia will release the GT300 series in Q1 2010. Should be a good step up in terms of performence compared to the cards you can get now. Best thing to do now is save up and get a next gen beast of a GPU and you should be sorted for years to come. :P
