I was a big RTS fan, having played countless hours of Starcraft and Warcraft 3 on battle.net for 3 years non-stop up till last year when I was hooked on Guild Wars. Today, I decided to play some more Warcraft 3 to get ready for Starcraft 2, even though I was winning a bunch of games, I'm just not feeling the hook that kept me playing for hours. I think I have outgrown RTS games, are any of guys like this too?

well personally i love the singleplayer in most RTSs, but hate the multiplayer the only tactic you need to win in any multiplayer RTS ever is rush..rush and more rush

i prefer TBS now because it gives you time to actually think up a strat other than rush

I outgrew RTS games before I even got good at them. It's just very unappealing to me, seeing who can build buildings faster. It's more about micro and less about actual strategy.

I to don't play a lot of multiplayer because theres really no tactics. Just rush, the only game I've seen you haven't been able to do this in is UaW:EA.

Why not give the genre a chance before giving up on it? You only appear to have played two RTS games - both are Blizzard games, and whule not entirely similar, both games share some fundamental structural similarities.

The RTS genre has lots more to offer, and at least in my opinion, much better to offer. You may not have outgorwn RTS games, but simply tired of Blizzard's formula. Why not try something from Relic or GPG before throwing the towel in?

I always thought the addictive nature of RTS was the online competitive play, rushing is not hard to counter, at least in Warcraft 3. Turtling is not too good either in games like AOE with impenetrable walls, those games can last hours. Although in Wacraft, you do both rushing and teching, harrass with heroes and tech in your base. There are many strategies, you just need to know how to counter them.

Anyways, in terms of PC gaming, Guild Wars is the game for me right now, quick PvP fun.

I tried the company of heroes game, played some 7 missions or so then I just stopped playing, it was fun but for some reasons I got tired of it. Also tried the demo of World in Conflict, I just didn't feel this one. I'll probably give Starcraft 2 a try whenever it comes out, I hope some other games don't my attention in this near future.

I play RTS games much less than I used to. Multiplayer did tend towards who was the fastest at rushing your opponent.

For me the best games were played over LAN with friends, and over several sessions you learnt each others tacticsand could have some really long epic fights, which were much more enjoyable than a 5 minute rush game.

Seems like everyone in this thread only plays the ol' Peon on gold mine style RTS games, why not play something in the Total War series? Or squad based RTS games like Heroes of WW2?

Those one needs tactics in order to previal.

Outgrow RTS games? You don't outgrow RTS games, if anything you grow into them. They require much more thought then FPS games.

Sounds like you got addicted to an MMO rather than outgrew RTS.

You need to break it up. Try some other RTSs that aren't so straight forward. Try World in Conflict and see if it is a good change.

That depends, the brainless tank spam of the CNC series arguably requires less thought then even the the simplest of shooters like doom 1.

I guess you could say that I've never grown into RTS games. They never seemed to appeal to me so I've never reallygiven them a shot.

Guild Wars is not quite an MMO, more like a PvP game, the PvP feel is about the same as the many FPS online multiplayers out there.
