Skyrim is not a game you would use to self justify upgrading your graphics card.
Go buy metro 2033 and when your machine starts dying you will say to yourself "Dear Black Baby Jesus, please send me a new video card, this one sucks"
My Phenom II @ 3.7ghz gets dips to 10 FPS in Markath with everything turned up. There is NO way he is getting 30 fps as a minimum. Go visit Markath.

Theres no way your getting 30 FPS in Skyrim with everything maxed, including AA/AF.
I was under the impression that Skyrim is heavily CPU dependant while not requiring much of a video card.
It still has good visuals, and as kaitanuvax said, it needs a very strong rig to max it.I got 2x6970 in CFX and drop below 30fps in some areas, like the aformentioned Markath and in Whiterun when standing atop the stair at Dragons Reach... Seems to me Merlin took up residence in your GPU...
Even the i7 2600k gets below 30 fps in Markath and Whiterun?
What a poorly optimized excuse of a game.
I am not sure what part ofMarkarth?? I took some screen shots. I am getting 53 in this shot (top right), the lowest I saw was 28.. :/
Unless the settings are not being applied correctly, then I am not sure what to say. I have restarted the game multiple times and checked the settings they are the same.
It's only when loading first few seconds. Once everything is loaded I go to between 60 to 80fps and higher. Same thing happens when I fast travel to Dragons Reach. Upon arrival (when turning to overlook the Whiterun market down the stairs) I dip to around 30fps for a sec, to then jump back up to 120plus fps...
I'm having difficulties understanding this thread... I thought good justification for a new GPU was "I want one"? :? :PChiliDragon
Its because the TC is getting a weird high amount of FPS when they shouldn't with 4850. When something like a 580 and even the 7970 struggle with Skyrim, you just cant believe a 4850 can get 30 FPS.

It's a valid point, and from that point of view, I wouldn't bother either. The approach I've always taken with upgrades, and that I kind of think should be the rule, is that if you don't get an improvement in game performance from your new hardware, save your money. :)
Here is a video someone made with a 4850 on ultra settings in Skyrim. Now remember he is recording which is an automatic FPS drop.

He has no AA on.

Well, you'll also notice that half of the time you're under 30fps, with a dip to 19fps when coming out of the cave just before the "Before The Storm" quest...
Must add that things look amazingly good though, for such and "old" card...
Maybe skyrim is a strange beast.. It might just favor the architecture in the 4800's. I should fire up Crysis and see what my FPS is. The only other game I have that would push the GPU is BFBC2.SinfulPotato
Skyrim is indeed a strange beast because of being totally unpredictable. Getting the game finally to work properly was an entire game all in itself :P

Dayum... I almost shot you an arrow in the knee... you being kind of dragon-ish and some such

Sorry... That was just too tempting to pass up. And do not meddle in the affairs of dragons! :x :PI play skyrim fine with my 275.
People claim you need an amazing rig to max it but you don't.
I drop below 30fps weirdly in certain spots in big cities but only looking in a certain direction. Then i look 10 degrees to the right and i'm back at 40 odd fps.
99% of the game i play above 30fps.
I have the same thing and get similar performance. Markarth is the only place where framerate goes into the gutter but it's peachy keen everywhere else. Though I did hear the newer generation of GeForce chipsets (the 5xx) seem to be the ones having problems for some reason. Can't say anything about ATI though.I play skyrim fine with my 275.

Skyrim is heavily CPU dependent but you still need a decent graphics card to play on higher settings/resolution. I believe that a Radeon 4850 should be able to play it on the settings while maintaining a 30fps+ average.

Never seen my CPU go over 25% of load when playing. Of course, I keep my eyes to the monitor most of the time, but the display on my G19 is sitting underneath my TV, so, when the needle on the display jumps, I notice...

As far as I know, Skyrim doesn't use more than two threads. If your G19 display shows the average processor load, it's possible that only two of your cores are being heavily taxed giving the 25% usage you're seeing.
