if you dont and 3 months later you get bsod, its because you fried your memory or something of that kind... ive had friends who didnt do it, it boots great works fine then all of the sudden shazam blue screen, and other nasty errors... not cool trust me. just do it to be safe if nothing else, i even use it if i am just reseating cards... i dont wanna be the one to fry a componet because i thought i was grounded...Twisted-Ice-God
That wouldn't work. You can't fry a componant and only then find out about it three months down the line. That's ridicules.
And no, I never use them, just touch my PC case every 2 minutes or so.
I used to work in a factory building PCs. We had to wear them all the time. We were subjected to 3M videos warning about the dangers. Now all these years later I can safely say - Don't worry about it!
I once tried to fry a video card with static. impossible. I had to resort to sparking it with a 12volt powersupply.
People (well 3M mainly) will tell you it does microscopic damage that will lead to shortened life of chips. Seriously, computer components become obsolete soon enough.
as others say keep touching the power supply, but for the power supply to be properly earthed it needs to be plugged in.
It won't kill the card outright, but it very easily CAN damage it to the point where you'll get random BSODs or graphical artifacts that you can't figure out. It doesn't take much to jack up hardware. I didn't wear it before, but now I do every time I go digging around inside the case.I used to work in a factory building PCs. I've been building my computers now for over 7 years. Never, ever, used a wrist strap. Have had no problems whatsoever due to static electricity. SimpJee
same here
I bought a wrist strap to be safe there very cheap and protect your computer from shorts.
Also the tiny components/chips on your motherboard, ram, gfx cards etc consist of hundreds of tiny capacitors within those chips and all it takes is a small amount of ESD to cause such a huge problem. I managed to short my mums old computer without a wrist strap. But motherboards these days have all sorts of anti static features that stop you from shorting it by accident e.g. magnetic plating (something like that that i read about that some Asus motherboard's have).
Better safe than to be sorry because when it comes down to it you may have just shorted your $600 GFX card.
Ive never used one with the 3 PC's ive built. Ive been pretty curious about this too. Glad to know it doesnt actually damage anything that badly. lordlunch2it does, people are just getting lucky or blaming the problems on something else. =P talk to pretty much anybody that actually works in a fab/clean room environment or manufactures computer hardware, and they'll tell you enough horror stories about how easy it is to damage a component. if you don't mind not wearing a strap, you shouldn't really mind using a cheap PSU either. it's pretty much the same thing - nothing is going to be killed instantly unless you're horribly unlucky, but what problems do crop up will be months down the line and almost impossible to trace back to the real culprit.
I wouldn't think that memory would be hurt by ESD. It would probably just corrupt and data that was on it.
Anyway, I got a wrist strap because my dad feels better when I use it. Most of the time, I do.
