I thought I'd see if GS has any interest in the genre of roguelikes.

If you're not familiar with roguelikes, the beginning of this Wikipedia article sums it up nicely.

I find them appealing even in this day and age for their depth, randomization, and addictive qualities that keep drawing me back over the years. Not to mention they have infinite replay value, for the most part, and with a little imagination, can be one hell of a ride.

Nearly all roguelike games are completely free to play nowadays -- if you haven't been acquainted, I highly recommend giving them a go. http://www.reddit.com/r/roguelikes and http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php/Main_Page are both great resources.

So -- any other roguelike fans around here?

I'm a fan of the more approachable roguelikes such as Dungeons of Dredmor, Binding of Isaac, Hack, Slash & Loot, and even Realm of the Mad God. Most roguelikes have atrocious accessibility with terrible UIs, controls, and graphics. All of which make these kinds of games unnecessarily complicated and convoluted. The most famous of which, Dwarf Fortress, is the best example of these bad qualities.

If only it received a UI, control, and graphical facelift. That game would be amazing.

I've only played Dungeons of Dredmor and The Binding of Isaac, but I enjoyed them immensely.

ROTMG isn't a roguelike although I did play it quite a bit despite its short term nature, also you do know there are graphics mods for Dwarf Fortress, right? I wouldn't mind if there were more games like Binding of Isaac and DoD, both are good examples of roguelikes "done right" and made appealing to a more modern audience thus allowing the possibility for better developer support as well as sequels.

... and WazHack! I'm developing it, so I'm biased, but approachability and roguelikeness are the guiding principles.

What makes WazHack stand out from the crowd? (DCSS/Angband/DoD player here)

Huh, I guess you learn something new every day. I wouldn't have known about these games unless you mentioned it lol. Thanks for bringing it up.

I'm not a fan of turn-based games, particularly turn-based games that aren't strategy games. I prefer the more fluid and faster pace that real-time combat systems provide. I also dont like games that are brand new and look like games from the 90s.

Yeah I just started really getting into them. Binding Of Isaac and Dungeons Of Dredmor have been what I have been playing for a while now. I wish they had more of them on steam.

I liked Day Z, which is rogue like kinda-sorta. Also, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are great games where the death penalty really makes you feel each death as a terribly calamity.
