What is the difference between Half Life & Half Life:Source??? Sry for the noob questions.... but I'm new to the Half Life UniverseZandeus
half life: source runs on the source engine so oyu can play it on newer operating systems, half life is an older game and wont work on xp or vista
..... do you (people who've played Half Life 1&2) think I would enjoy Half Life 2? I like FPS's, I like games with story, and I have a rig good enough to play BIOSHOCK on MAX with a nice steady framerate. Just wondering if I should pick this up.Zandeus
hell yeah dude - that game kick ass

Don't know about vista, but half-life runs on XP just fine. You're right though, the difference is the source engine, but the only things this changes (as far as I was able to tell at least) is better looking water and the enhanced physics effects. Other then that it looks and plays exactly the same (kind of a wasted opportunity if you ask me..). I've heard the dated graphics putting peoples of, but it's a classic and still worth playing imo.
Anyway, like's been said, you can't go wrong buying HL2, it's a great game. Get it on pc, not only cheaper but there are tons of mods to download for it..
Endless fun on garrys mod.Tehgiggles
Was about to say that myself, just been playing it, its AMAZING!
I suggest waiting for The Orange Box to come out soon. The Orange Box includes: Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. All of that for $50, so thats basically $10 per game.
While your waiting, order the Half-Life 1: Anthology, it includes 4 games: Half-Life, Opposing Force (1st expansion), Blue Shift (2nd expansion), and it includes Team Fortress. All of that for only $8. So thats $2 per game.
I hope you enjoy the Half-Life series as much as I did. :)
I second that. I never hadn't played the first Half-Life when I played the second for the first time, and it was an excellent experience.I suggest waiting for The Orange Box to come out soon. Dude. No freaking question. Get the Half-Life 2 pack that comes with Half-Life: Source (original Half-Life 1, in the Source engine). The, if you're really into story, play through that first. Then play Half-Life 2, then get Episode 1 and play that, as well. Those are all 3 of the best story-based shooters ever.the_bi99man
Agreed. If your lookin for a good story driven FPS, Half-Life is your game. Im sure you'll love it. If not.... Im sending you a headcrab.
both HL1 AND HL2 are totaly needed, (all in a small beautiful steam account)
those games are essentials, they are ****cs, and their value is millions of time bigger than what you pay for them
with all the mods and everything, it's the biggest community for a serie
quickly install it.... and play it and dont come back until you beat both.. then we will quiz you to make sure you fully comprehended the wonderful storyline and characters and weapons...Elemayo
ROFL, well I enjoyed HL: Blueshift, but that's the only one i have ever played i somehow think im missing out on it :(
You might as well just wait for the orange box where you'll get hl2, ep1, ep2 + some other games.BounceDK
I agree, just wait for the orange box, and those other games are Portal and Team Fortress 2. Both those games look really fun ! If you haven't seem either or heard of em, i suggest you look em up and get the oj box when i comes out.
.... so I bought HL2, and I started playing.... and, meh, it's alright i guess.....
j/k
HOLY CRAP, its amazing! I can't believe I went so long without knowing the splendor of HL2.I wanna beat that old man's head in with my crobar. the old guy with white hair on the monitors.... the one that appears at least to be the leader. I'm only about 30 - 60 min. into it though. Just got off little Jet Ski/boat thingy.

sounds great :)
I got all things Valve on Steam for cheap. I'd been mired in an MMO for many years (EverQuest) and had missed a lot, including the original Half-Life and its expansions.
Somehow I could not bring myself to skip the original but that's just me. It's not like you have to play it although personally I would recommend it from what I have seen so far. I think I am about halfway through the first game and its excellent. The Source version as someone else said is kind of a half-baked upgrade, but it does improve the environment visuals some and that's nice. I would have played it even without that so I am glad they did that much.
This series has long been hailed as among the very best PC shooters ever made so I really wanted to play from game one and see it all. Having played CS and DoD source along with the HL2 demo though, I am really looking forward to the current games. They look amazing and run so well on midrange hardware.
While I missed the single player games, I did spend a fair amount of time in CS, DoD, Firearms, DM Classic and of course TFC. The new Team Fortress 2 is going to be amazing and a real blast to play I can tell. I can't wait.
I love Valve :-)

It runs fine on both xp and vista provided you have the latest patches.

People will often tell you to play the first Half Life before you pick up the second. Know what I say? They told me the same thing, and it's really not necessary. If you enjoyed Bioshock, you will probably enjoy Half Life 2.
Although I will say that Half Life 2 (and Episode One) felt really short to me. In fact, Halo 2 felt much longer to me. You can always go to Fileplanet and download the demo if you're wondering about it so much.
EDIT: Also I'll add that people obsess over the storylines of these games, but honestly, I saw no real storyline what so ever in Half Life 1 or 2. It was purely gameplay (as it was meant to be). IF you want games with the best storylines, then look some of Squaresoft's games.
I'll be the dissenter then, shall I?
If you're looking for a game with an immersive story, give Half Life 2 a miss. It really doesn't have much of a narrative at all. It's basically a series of disjointed levels designed to show off some aspect of the game engine. A few levels of corridor crawling, a few levels of piloting a riverboat, some more corridor crawling, a tiny bit of exposition which revolves mostly around a new weapon, then a few levels of driving a buggy, a few levels trying and failing to be "scary", a bit more expostion, some platformer, jumping levels, and a very anti-climatic boss fight.
I don't understand why so many people seem enthralled with the story. There's really very little in the way of explanation, character development, or exposition. You, the player, are left to fill in the gaps and details with your own conjectures. Perhaps that appeals to some people.
Technically, it's a very well designed game. It's superbly optimized but the core gameplay is rather repetative. It's OK, but certainly not deserving of the hype it garnered.

Exactly. It's an awesome game series, but it's certainly not deserving of all the hype it receives from everyone. Truthfully, I thought Halo's series had a better storyline...but that's just me.
