Hey guys, long time no type, having a bit of trouble picking a lappy thats decent for college and can last me for three years.

1. Budget: $600 to $750/800 USD (If 800 it has to have everything that would want)

2. A big plus if it has discrete graphics preferably nvidia as I already have and AMD/AMD system at home I want to try something different

3. The graphics will not be primarily used for gaming although I will; I want it for photoshop/ editing videos in sony movie studio HD platinum/vegas

4. It should have the new 22nm ivies as I heard the thermals are quite good and it has the 4000 IGP

5. Decent display? not really 1080P or 900P but more so decent color reproduction.

6. Are the quad ivies even worth it more than the sandy? or the dual core ivies?or should I say 2nd gen i5 and i7 versus 3rd gen i5 and i7

Here are some laps I had in mind;

http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0388092

http://www.bjs.com/store/asus-r500vd-bs71-15-6-laptop-with-3rd-gen-intel-core-i7-3610qm-processor-with-turbo-boost-2-0-8gb-ddr3-500gb-hdd.147774869-.html

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230133

Does anyone know any websites that give college discounts; I know the major ones like newegg, dell, hp and the like but more "niche" sites?

If anyone can help...thank you!

If you don't mind not having dedicated graphics, you can easily get a Fujitsu Lifebook T5010 used off eBay for under $300, then use the savings to upgrade to 8 GB of DDR3 and a SSD. The only reasons I'd suggest going this route for someone who wants a lot of power and wouldn't normally even consider an old Core 2 Duo model? -You care about color reproduction. The T5010 is guaranteed to have BOE Hydis AFFS+ panels, about the best you can get for a laptop. While it's only 6-bit color (not that you're getting 8-bit color in a laptop that isn't packing one of HP's DreamColor panels), the viewing angles are excellent, and so is outdoor viewability. Certainly leagues ahead of any TN panel, if you don't mind the 1280x800 resolution and 13.3" size. -Photoshop would benefit greatly from having an integrated Wacom Penabled digitizer behind that nice AFFS+ screen. You could also use it to take notes in class for when a keyboard alone won't cut it (math formulas, graphs, diagrams, etc.), especially if you share my distaste for paper. -The newer T900 (Arrandale) and T901 (Sandy Bridge) will generally exceed your budget, and with very little to gain in practice other than finger multi-touch and an NVIDIA NVS 4200M option on the T901 (a very, very rare case of dedicated graphics in a convertible tablet). Meanwhile, you can easily get a decked-out T5010 for under $400 and put the savings toward a more powerful computer later on. Photoshop on one notebook, movie editing on the other! Otherwise...you're going to have a difficult tradeoff. Performance and a large screen, or a small, high-quality screen with pen input? You decide.

Nameless thanks very much, I shouldn't have put so much emphasis on the photoshop/video editing portion of my explanation as it is not my major, just something I am interested in. so I am not really into the tablet PC's as much, especially a core 2 duo one. But is the best hope for a decent panel DELL, HP, APPLE? I know dell is the master of american IPS panels (do they outsource I dunno, well apple does) If so then I'll just go with performance and a crappy screen cause i know I'll be paying out the wazoo

That review is for the 15.6" model. Either way, I doubt that the screen is THAT bad, lol.. I couldn't find anything better in your price range...

Unfortunately, I don't know of any non-convertible notebooks with non-TN panels, save for the HP EliteBook models with DreamColor IPS panels and probably Apple's "Retina" MacBook Pro, and those are already way out of your budget. Quality hardware doesn't come cheap 'til it's three years old, I hate to say. You might just be better off getting a decently powerful notebook with the usual cheap TN crap and using an external IPS monitor for anything color-critical.
