I just got a Radeon HD 4890, but whenever it's even just barely stressed, it makes a terrible whining sound. I know it's not the fan (took a careful look at that), and have come to the conclusion that it's just a funky capacitor. Unfortunately that's about where my knowledge on the matter stops. So, anyone have any idea whether that's even close to right? And if it is, you think it's going to be a problem beyond an irritating noise?

That's a very very common problem. Most 4890's have them (including mine). There shouldn't be any issues with it.

Good. I can stand the noise (I only really noticed it since I had the case open).

It's probably an inductor not a capicator. Touch the inductor with your finger, see if it still makes that noise.

Yeah mine seems to have the same problem. I've talked to XFX about it a little bit, might end up returning it if I really can't stand it, but what I was originally hoping for was that I might be able to return it and pay the difference for the 5870 but they said that was a "no go" since they don't have a "step up program" :)

Supposedely it has to do with the voltage regulation hardware concerning either the fan or the chip. It's a pretty common problem. Some of them are prone to it and some not, it shouldn't affect functionality though.

I hope for your sake it isn't a capacitor. That could create some performance problems.
