My HD4850 is hitting extremely high temperatures, when playing Crysis or Crysis Warhead the temperature peaks at 106C, even with the fan fixed at 54%. My case is an Antec 900, with a 120mm fan installed on the side, so airflow is obviously not a problem. Have tried reapplying thermal paste twice, and even tried getting a new 750 watt powersupply for the card to make sure power wasn't an issue. Is there something wrong with the card itself, or is there something im missing here?

Wow, you should just replace the cooler with an Arctic cooling s1, I got up to 80c in crysis, im under 50c in it now, this is on my 8800gt oc.

The rv770 is designed to support up to 105C, my recommendation would be: remove the card and grab a aftermarket cooling solution.

Unless the bios temp detector is just screwing with you.

Increase the fan speed. I don't play Crysis without the fan at a minimun of 75%

I've read that the 4850s and the 4870s need after market cooling because they run way to warm. When I build my comp (Also my first) I plan on going with the thermalright HR-03 because it's the best out there right now.

Ok just remembered I have an aftermarket cooler on my 7900 gt I can use on this card, problem is it doesn't have any ram coolers on it. My 7900 gt ran fine without the ram coolers, would the 4850 run fine without them?

Its this cooler btw

the arctic cooling s1 rev 2 is the best. Honestly, going from near 60c idle to 40c idle is great for $30.

I already have a cooler from an old card I can use though, and the reviews for it say that it cools a 4850 very well. Do you think it would run ok without ram coolers?

The RAM gets extremely hot on the 4850. On full load, my RAM heats up to about 100C, while my core temp is around 80C. I would strongly suggest get ram heatsinks.

Sucks for you!! SHould've gotten an nvidia. First card I ever got was an ati x800 and that peice ran like crap with a capital C. It was loud and burny smelling. My games would chunk up after like 5 minutes, and yes it was because of the poor design, just like the 4850. I currently have a 9800 GTX and the beast still isn't as loud as my puny x800.

Honestly, why don't you just turn the fan up? Sure its noisy, but you shouldn't hear it over your game.

I've tried turning the fan up, it hardly makes a difference for me, only brought the tempeture down to about 100C for a whole lot more noise. Plus, I managed to find a pair of spare ram sinks lying around, fully installed the heatsink and just got done playing crysis warhead, and the highest it got was 57C :D Completly silent too.

Excellent news :)

So you had a faulty cooler, i think that may be a good explanation.

That's good to hear. I would install an aftermarket cooler but I don't want to void my warranty.

Your gonna need ram coolers I believe. Some company called akasa supposedly makes good ones.

As long as it's not over 9000 you'll be fine.

Id suggest getting a aftermarket cooler...also you can take some extra fan if you got laying around just make them blowing directly on back of the card to cool it down some also.

I need a aftermarket cooler for my 8800 GT also man if i let the card auto control the fan my **** idles at 70c on the desktop and ingame i seen it 100c or more.

Im scared to run the 8800 gt now so i just use my 8600 gts run alot cooler.

You are really not in here for doing constructive things are ya?

And the "poor design" of the HD4850 does seem to get better FPS than the 9800GTX, and this is it's main funktion isn't oit? ;)

Clearly a gpu hitting 106c has a malfunction, or else the Case has inadequate with cooling.

This has nothing with poor design to do, theese cards are ment to run silent (aka hot!), but 106c is very high, even for the HD4850.

You must have a faulty card. I had the bfg880gt512 and the lowest emp i could get wit the fan at 100% and my ac craked up in the room was like 51c.I switched to a visiontek 4850 and I idle at 46-48 with the fan at about 50% and if i turn it up to 75% or more with the ac cranked i can get to 35c idle, and with the 8800gt i was hitting almost 80on load in fear and cod4 wth the 4850 i barley hit 60 most of the time.THE 4850S ARENT RRUNNING HOT YOU JUST HAVE TO USE RIVATURNER 2.11 OR THE FAN FIX.
