I recently bought a brand spankin' new Sapphire RADEON HD 4870X2. After managing just about to shove it into my case with the aid of a hammer (I'm kidding...) I wasted no time installing the drivers (8.10) and booting up Crysis Warhead. First of all, I tried setting the graphics to optimum levels with the one-click button in options (expecting it to set to Enthusiast) - imagine my shock horror when it set the game to Mainstream. Mainstream?! I then set the settings to Enthusiast myself, and attempted to load the game. The one time the game DID load, it ran incredibly slowly before crashing. Now, the game won't load past the level loading screen (in my case, the screen for the first level, "Call Me Ishmael"). Whenever I have to Control+Alt+Delete out of the game, my PC continues to be sluggish, but only after booting up, then closing Crysis Warhead. I really don't know what's wrong, but it's pissing me off.

This is why ATI sucks. You should get the GTX 280... It runs a lot better.

Possibly the drivers.

I've just bought a whole new PC (Vista still installing as I type) with a Radeon HD4850. I looked on the ATI site for Vista 64-bit drivers, and while there are drop down options for lots of specific cards the only one relevant for us is the 4800 series option. So it looks like this is a fairly new addition to their drivers and may take some time to make full use of them.

I think the latest drivers are 8.11 - I think they came out yesterday by the date on the site, so you might want to give them a try. I will in a few hours once everything else has finished installing :D

I would've done, 'cept I've had problems with nVidia cards as of late, and I'm on an Intel X48 chipset. :P

I'll try updating the drivers to 8.11 and see what happens.

All wrong, the game just sucks, i still don't get why people are trying to run it desperately. It's just a tech demo IMO.

I don't really like Crysis Warhead that much, but I want to know why my card refuses to run it.

I just tried to run it with Catalyst 8.11, and I got the infinite loop bug. I have no idea how to fix this.

Agree to that.Crysis warhead was a pure waste of my money. The only reason i bought it was to test my 8800GTS and crucial blaster ram, only to find out that its far lighter than original Crysis.

It's "The way it's meant to be played" game. Nothing special...just an nVIDIA favored game. This game doesn't even fully support crossfire and it's crappy performance already tells you about it's coding team. Though I can't wait to SLI another GTX 280.

Because its small, pointless and hell the timeline doesnt even match with Crysis 1 .Its only fun to play because of the super advance AI,physics and graphics.

I say just run it on mainstream. Its still going to look better than any other game out there. Plus, the crysis engine isn't optimized very well. As someone said above me, its basically a tech demo from crytek showing off their new engine way too far in advance for anybody to run the game on max.

It's way more than a tech demo. A game that lets you complete missions going stealthy, all guns blazing, etc. is not a tech demo at all. Great gameplay also.

I wish people would stop going on like all I ever want to do is play Crysis. I'm only using this game as a test for the card - my 8800GT could run it on Enthusiast at about 15fps at 1280x1024 with no AA. I expect this card to at least be able to do that. I tried playing Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 today, and that loaded a few choppy graphics before crashing on me as well. I don't know if I have DirectX 10 installed, but I tried to install it and it keeps saying the file cannot be downloaded (through the Windows Vista DirectX SDK).

Surely it can't be that bad a card if I can use it in Windows? I just thought it would be able to run my games...

EDIT: Also, I said in an earlier post - my graphics driver likes to stop responding and "recover" or "reset" itself (it comes up as either ati2dvag or another one that I can't remember the name of. I think it's an "infinite loop". Anyone any ideas?

EDIT 2: The other one is called atikmdiag. I don't know what is wrong with these files.

Do you have hotfix driver installed?

Did you plug both pci-e cable from PSU for extra power for your card.

Hopefully you're not putting AA for crysis.

Heat probleme, temps?

haha, this is the same problem that nvidia had a few months ago, you all say that nvidia sucks or ati sucks, but when it comes down to it they fluctuate and one will catch up with the other, ati just finally caught up with the same problems nvidia had, i have a gtx 260, when i first got it the card would run n windows just fine, and then it would start tripping ballz in games, don't know how it was able to run in window, i had to rma it and get a new one, I'll bet that's your problem and your second problem is a driver issue, does the screen go black while trying to play a game and come back up on the desktop with a tiny pop-up assuring that everything is OK because although the video driver was lost, it was recovered? and it has a weird code like you listed, its just a driver issue and nvidia handled it with their second or third driver revision for their new gtx 200 series cards, ati is just taking longer too fix theirs, the 4870x2 cards are still relatively new and are just a little buggy, give it time they will take care of the issue

Try updating your motherboard's chipset drivers for the X38/X48 chipset. You can usually get the latest ones off of the motherboard manufacturers website.

Ok, now I'm hitting a problem I haven't seen before. When trying to install any GPU drivers (older or newer ones), I get the error, "INF file not found" and the driver install fails. This is really beginning to piss me off. I have plugged in a six pin and eight pin connector to the graphics card, and it's running at 27% fan speed and 71 degrees idle (that's quite hot, I must say - though I understood that the card ran hot before I bought it). I'm updating the Intel chipset drivers at the moment, but I'm coming to the end of my tether with this.

Sounds to me like ATI's drivers for Vista haven't caught up with the cards as yet. The installer doesn't recognize your card. Not exactly new. I had this problem for a bit with my nVidia 9800GTX. About all you can do is wait and maybe pester ATI to get Vista drivers rolled out.

PS. 71 C under load is warm but not dangerous for an enthusiast's graphics card. You don't really need to start worrying until it get close to around 90.

How long have you had the card? If you havent had it for long, I suggest uninstalling the drivers, taking the card out and take it back to where ever you got it from. If none of the solutations suggested here aren't working, then the problem is that you may have a bum card.

ok so in catalyst control center set your cards fan speed to between 50-60%, that should help your temp problems for that. Another cause could be your overclock on your cpu and the game not liking it try a downclock trial, maybe temp problems there. also the fact it gave you a INF file error means your chipset drivers need to be updated or re-installed.

Ok, this is getting ridiculous.

I uninstalled the drivers, ran Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode, then reinstalled the 8.10 drivers. I also updated my chipset drivers. I then ran Crysis Warhead (still detecting "Mainstream" settings) and it would not load up the first level past 80%, at which point I got the "atikmdag has stopped responding and recovered" error. I then tried turning off the overclock in my BIOS. I restarted the PC, started Crysis Warhead again, and... shock horror. I get the atikmdag has stopped responding error SECONDS after the EA logo shows up. Gaaaaah >

that must be a driver issue, because even if it was overheating before, it shouldnt heat up that fast and certainly not on the lodaing screen, i know this sounds bad, but i have heard of the actual operating system getting corrupted and causing problems like this before, i dont know for sure, (i've been lucky enough not to have this happen yet) but if it has you may have to reinstall your operating system, or wait it out like the others were saying and hope ATI gets out some new drivers

I love you.

As for the driver issues - I've kicked the fan on the card up to 55%, it's loud, but the card's running at 40 degs idle instead of 71. I tried running Warhead again, and whilst it's still setting my specs to Mainstream (why?! Do I need to enable both GPU cores or something?!) I can run the first level at Enthusiast settings with some minor slowdown (Gaaaah!). I think it may very well be a heat issue.... I knew the card ran hot, but not this hot. I'm also going to try reinstalling both the OS and the game within the coming week.

Thank you so much everyone for your input, by the way. It's massively appreciated. :)

So it can run but it crashes at some point?

Maybe a Warhead patch or an ATI hotfix for the game can correct this issue.

its probably because the game is sponsored by nvidia,

but that sucks about your fan speed, is it really that loud at 50%?? my gtx 260 runs nice and cool and doesnt make a sound at 75% fan speed, you could have a damaged fan or somethin, that would explain the overheating, dont know if ati cards are supposed to be that loud or not, but that sucks if they are

I had that problem. and I tried everything out there. Save yourself the time and do a clean install. It will fix it right up. It's definitely a driver issue.

I really don't know what's wrong, but it's pissing me off.

sorry to bring up an old post like this, but how did it all go ? the reason why i ask is that i reasently installed a card of that type, a bit more clockspeed maybe but should not matter much. i have no problem playing Crysis Warhead at 1920x1200 with 2x AA on entusiast detail. so i was wondering how things turned out for you, how did you fix the problem if you did fix it. sorry to nag about it. just a good way to learn something new today as well :)

Oh, sorry, I can't've made myself very clear... I pushed the fan speed up, effectively - I tried the other fixes in the topic, but I think it came down to overheating. I knew it ran hot, but I didn't know it was this hot! :( I've tried it at 1280x800 (on a 32" widescreen TV - CCC and Windows Display seem to conflict, and all kinds of crap happens to my display, like, the screens keep swapping position (so the mouse goes off the left of my screen, onto the TV which is to the right of my screen, etc etc)) and I can run it at 4x AA on Enthusiast - but it loads VERY slowly, and the first minute or two of gameplay is painfully slow, I don't know why this is. It plays Red Alert 3 on max with 8x AA (though to be honest I don't see a difference - maybe it's too low resolution? Is anyone experienced with upping the resolution on a 32" TV? Or properly configuring it for two monitors? o_O). So yeah, I think (read: hope) it was an overheating problem. The fan is LOUD (and annoying), but it's better than nothing, I guess...
