So my Data drive got fried and I am trying to replace it. I still have my OS drive which is a SATA drive and I am trying to link up a new 300g, but it is IDE.

I have tried using it as a slave or a primary drive, but it doesn't seem that either works... The drive doesn't even show up in my BIOS. Anyone have any suggestions on this?

Give us more details of what you are trying to do. What do you mean by "OS Drive", you said it's got fried right? You are trying to connect the faulty HDD to your PC? Also keep in mind that old motherboards do not list SATA drives to the HDD List in BIOS.

What caused your data drive to fry? If your mobo has been damaged you may have fried one or more of your ports, possibly the IDE port. If the new data drive is not showing up in the BIOS I would start by taking it to another PC and see if it shows up there. If it shows up on another PC but not on your first PC then you may have either a bad port connection. You may also want to restore your BIOS settings. Good Luck.

My OS (Operating System) drive is fine. My old data drive got fried which was a SATA drive. I am trying to replace the old data drive which is kaput with an IDE drive. So essentially I am trying to hook up a SATA drive (OS drive) with an IDE drive (new data drive).

The only thing that might help is to mention the motherboard. BIOSTAR GEFORCE 6100-M9 939 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

This is a newer mainboard, and has connections for both types of HD. Thanks for your help!

Is this a new HDD, are you sure its working? The IDE channel your hard drive is hooked up, does it have any other device on it? (Like a DVD/CD device). If so you must set the jumpers correctly. Also check the BIOS options, your IDE channel option might be set to "disabled".

What do you mean when you say you are trying to "hook up" a SATA drive with an IDE drive? The two do not need to be connected in any way unless you are running a RAID array, in which case they should be identical drives. Also, not to sound like a snob, but why would you want to replace your fried SATA data drive with an IDE drive?

By hook up, I meant connect both of them to the mainboard and use them, not a fan of RAID anyhow... I bought the IDE drive about 3 years ago as a backup data drive. I would rather use that than buy a new one.

Thanks Gamius, I think that might be it. Will check my BIOS settings when I get home. I'm pretty sure the cables are hooked up correctly and thought it had something to do with BIOS.

Some times with newer boards IDE Is disabled in the BIOS, you could also check to see if it works by plugging them in one at a time (sounds silly but has worked for me) and do everything a step at a time, also check the drive is spinning and actually on ?

Alright, messed around a bit. BIOS is now recognizing the HD as well as Device Manager, but it still will not show up in "My Computer".

I know this drive needs to be formatted, but I can't find it to access it...

right-click on My Computer and goto manage then disk management. It isn't showing up in my computer because it hasn't been assigned a drive letter. In disk management u can format and assign it.
