Does a 400GB Harddrive justify a 800 price difference..

And how much video could you put on a 4.7GB DVD-RW ?

What is this player recorder you talking about? Is it some kind of digital video recorder like tivo? A DVD, depending on the video quality, probably 2hrs on high quality, but depends. 400gb is kind of overkill unless you want a whole archive or something.

Are you saying the version with the harddrive is $800 more? A 500gb internal HDD cost around $129 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152052

Don't some Tivos let you connect external HDDs to transfer recorded files or use as more storage?

400GB is a lot.  And I'm guessing you're looking at one of the DVD recorders that also acts as a DVR.  I wouldn't spend the huge amount for a 400GB recorder.  It all depends on how much you are going to have sitting around.

TIVO, the most popular and well known DVR? You never heard of it?

Please link us to the models you are talking about. Is the one with a HDD a digital video recorder (DVR)? This means does it have a TV tuner and can schedule recordings of tv shows, more than one tuner to watch a show while it's recording another station. $800 seems like a lot of just adding a $100 drive to it. If you are even considering it you should know what the purpose of this HDD is and how you'd use it. I mean for $600 you can get a HD Tivo Series 3 that has two digital cable tuners and can record two HD channels at the same time. Then with $200 more you can buy a separate dvd recorder. Again, a Tivo replaces your VCR and acts like a Super Cable box. You can pause tv, even buffers so you can rewind, with their service you can have it record every new episode of a shows season, ignoring repeats and knows when the schedule changes.

$600 something here. If you were about to pay a crazy $800 for some dvd recorder/DVR, why not this and a separate DVD recorder:
