I really need everyones advice on this matter since I have about 100gb of stuff on this drive.. thank you

My problem is I bought a WD 1tb drive less then a month ago, I run it as a slave on my computer just for storage. I have about 100gig of pictures and family videos on it, today I rebooted my computer and it would not start, it would get to the windows xp load screen and then just turn to a black screen, it would not boot in safe mode or boot to last known good config.. If I unhook the 1tb drive my computer will boot fine and run with no problems, anyone have any idea what could be wrong with the drive and what I could do to get the data off it if I have to rma it back to WD?

Thank you for your help

Burn a copy of Linux Puppy and boot from it....your HDD 'should' be visible so you can get your files from it there!

Actually scrap that for the time being,,,put in your xp cd and go into the recovery console.....then type chkdsk /r

this will run a check for bad sectors (maybe the reason why it wont load) and fix them.

well if the os isnt booting up then the problem is on your master hdd so your slave is probably fine....best run a chkdsk /r on your master hdd then.

hmmmm, well then it sounds like your slave it pretty messed up if if wont allow your C: drive to boot up at all. Best try a Chkdsk /r on it to get it temporarily working...it will probably be called the E: or F: drive (i forget).

So did you run the CHKDSK /R on the slave? If so did you try booting from the Puppy CD?

sorry I didnt get a chance to repost back after I tried the CHKDSK/R and the linux puppy, I got the computer to boot showing the slave drive, the CHKDSK on the slave locks up at 53% percent no matter how I run it., The slave drive will open up but anytime I try to open anything or move anything the computer locks up even when using puppy, I am going to try to put it in another computer and see if it will allow me to move things, if not I do not know what im going to do, many of the photos on the drive are very important to me since the person has passed away.. I usually back up my drives every few months but I just purchsed this drive on jan 20th and didnt think I needed a back up so soon.. thanks for all your help

Try turning the hard drive upside down, if it's a mechanical fault this can sometimes make it work for a brief period. If not looks like your gonna have to try the good old freezer trick as a last resort.

How long did you wait at the 53%? I say that because when it finds bad sectors it takes ages for it to repair them....give it quite a few hours to complete.

I waited about an hour and a half, should I wait longer? I found a program called powersuite that allows you to boot from it and move files from one drive to another drive, so if all else fails I can use that if it will run.. thank you for all your help

If you really want that data back you could try taking the drive to a company that does just that: recover data. Keep in mind that it can be EXPENSIVE. We had to do that at work when one of our drives failed and it cost us about $100/GB for laser data recovery.

Wow! That is crazy, but now that I think about it... We paid $4,000 and got back a DVD. So yeah, you're right. That comes out to about $850 per GB. I was thinking of the capacity of the drive, which was 40GB, not how much data we got back. Sorry!

It was the server hard drive so... everything, pretty much. Mostly MS Office documents, spreadsheets, my AutoCAD drawings, etc. It was a catastrophe. One that could have been avoided had they heeded my warnings to implement a backup solution, but they didn't. They have now though, you better believe that! And so should anyone else who reads this. Backup your files people! Do it now!

to have someone retrieve my data at $800 a GB would cost me a small fortune seeing as its a 1Tb drive, most of the drive I have backed up, the parts I was hoping to salvage are things I loaded to it within the last 2 weeks, I didnt think of backing them up since the drive was only a month old. I actually have a data recovery program that the local computer store recommended and it seems to be finding some of the data and moving it to a good drive. so I have my fingers crossed...

Have you tried connecting it as if it was a external drive and plugging it in that way, I know at my work we have salvaged a lot of hard drives by using them externally when the computer would not boot. We attach them to Macs and have them natevely mounted and we can get into the drive and salvage what we can. Don't know if that is an option or not for you.

You might want to think about getting a second identical drive and putting them in RAID 1. Real-time backup is the way to go in my opinion. I also use Cobian Backup 9 to backup my files to an external drive. It's free and might be worth looking into to perhaps prevent this from happening again in the future.
