I just recieved a Panasonic HD-DVR that supposedly upconverts DVDs to 1080p with HDMI and regular TV channels as well. I plug in the cable and pop in a DVD. The resolution looks exactly the same. I watch a TV channel. It still looks exactly like standard TV. What am I doing wrong? I checked the manual about video issues and one option was something like "There is no visual change in picture quality when switching display cables" and the solution "The effect may not be noticeable on certain displays." What the hell is that supposed to mean? The whole point of the thing is to record channels and upconvert resolution for DVDs and cable TV. How do I fix this?
Double post but if it helps, I have a Vizio 32' LCD TV with Comcast Digital Cable. Even the digital channels that are built into the DVR with a tuner do not look anything like HD quality.
Wait.....DVR? Isn't that a video recorder from your cable or satellite provider?? I don't get how you're playing DVDs on it :? Anyway read the manual and see if there is a special way you're supposed to set it up i guess.
There is only so much upscaling to do before it just doesnt help. If your signal source or DVD is poorly mastered it won't look good no matter how much it is upscaled, generally upscaling looks best on digital receptions as far as the DVD goes if it isnt hooked up through hdmi generally they won't fully upscale the DVD's due to the limitations placed on them through the DVD coalition hich says you can only upscale through VGA or HDMI and not component. Some upscaling DVD players though do get around that but I cant remember which ones off the top of my head.
My Dad has a Samsung DVD/VHS combo and when you play a regular DVD movie in the dvd player and play it on the HDTV that he has it becomes HD automaticly and supposedly you can record from the vhs tapes to a dvd disc and so there for it becomes hd once on the dvd disc.
