Today I noticed that after watching tv anywhere from 5-10 minutes it will automatically shut off, and turn back on again a split second later. Takes awhile for picture to come back, for warming up purposes I suppose since it's done this from day 1. I called Sony support and spoke to 2 different techs, the first one said it sounded like the bulb but to be sure I had to plug my TV directly into the wall......After about 10minutes it was still running good and he said to call back if it happend again. A few minutes later it shut off/on .....I call back and she also said it sounded like the bulb was dying. Luckily I bought the extended warranty and should be hearing from a local authorized Sony repair shop tomorrow.

Then I started thinking about it...... If it's just a simple matter of the bulb, why is the TV turning off/on over and over again? I would think the display might shut off, but I should still be able to hear the program on my speakers right? I've noticed that the fan/s are not kicking in when I start my TV....Before I could clearly hear them on startup, because they were fairly noisy for the first 5 seconds or so while warming up..... So my guess is the fans are screwed and my TV is overheating.

I'm just curious if anyone has had a bulb go out on them, and if so does it result in the TV turning itself off and on? Looking at the reviews of the repair place my warranty uses it looks like I could be in for a VERY long repair time. If it's just a bulb from what I hear it's fairly simple to replace and would hopefully be allowed to just pick up the part and do it myself...... Superbowl next week and although I can DVR it, it wouldn't be the same :(

usualy there is some sort of warning from fairly modern tv's, especialy large ones, built into the tv which should let you know if the bulb needs replacing. this is the case with my tv anyway. from what you say it dose seem like an overheating problem to me though im no expert myself. if you still got the manual have a look and see how often the bulb should be replaced and if there should be a warning light hope this is helpfull

My TV isn't too old, 2006.......According to the Sony troubleshooting it says if a red light flashes 3 times a bulb replacement is needed, but maybe that's if the bulb is officially dead? Sony said a replacement bulb is needed around every 3yrs, so even though it's only been about 2yrs it's getting close. I suppose if anything else it might be good to have a bulb replacement before my warranty expires in December (Looks like they're around $200-$300 for a replacement) The TV still turns on for awhile, it's just extremely annoying to have it turn off and restart for no apparent reason.

Post it in the avsforum rear projection section :? If i had to guess i wouldn't say it's the bulb........but yah might as well get it replaced while it's still under warranty.
