I have a 360 and want to buy a monitor instead of an HDTV. What do I need to hook the picture and sound from my 360 to the monitor?

An XBOX VGA cable will do the trick for video and phono cables to your audio output(2 phono to 3.5mm for your monitor). As for things to look for in a monitor: good response times(under 8ms) 1to1 pixel mapping if it doesn't run at the XBOXs native resolution. A cursory Google search turned up this: http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/703/703073p1.html

So do I have to have my computer nearby if I want sound for my gaming? is there any quick and easy ways to get sound? I have the computer speakers (2.1) but I want to keep my 360 where it is.

You can just plug your xbox into an a/v receiver, assuming you had one.

What's an a/v receiver, a different set of speakers, or a special connecter?

With the proper cable you should be able to run the xbox through the 2.1 set with no problems. Do they have an aux input or anything like that on the back or is it just the one input from the computer? An A/V receiver is a piece of equipment that takes numerous inputs from audio or video sources and outputs them to a single device.

Thats usually what you'd have your home theatre/stereo, tv, dvd player hooked up to... How do you normally get sound through your console, just through the tv speakers?

Captain_Tripps: the majority of people don't have amps or receivers and just use their TV speakers through SCART, phono or HDMI etc.

Something like this might be in order if he wants to use the 2.1 set he has: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Phono-Female-3-5mm-Audio-Cable/dp/B000Q8KSS0

I bet more people than not with HDTVs do have receivers. You could probably also use your PC speakers directly with your xbox with the right adapter. (2 channel analog only though)
