Samsung, toshiba, panasonic, and sony. 46 inches is only few inches bigger why waste the money unless you get a 50 inch.

well im still looking at what type of models are in our price range, and that the biggest size while it has everything top-notch

like im not sure what must-haves are different from a panasonic 50" HDTV (comes with free dvd recorder) or get a sony 46" HDTV 'XBR' series or a totally different model

I would say get LCD rather than plasma. Anothing thing is look at the response time. Im not sure of what mine is but one of my mates is a faster time, this doesnt matter much unless you intend on playing guitar hero (so far thats the only game thats showed problems). Its harder on mine to get the notes than on his, and I also have to have my game adjusted so it will work properly. I mean its not a real problem but Im just putting it out there. I would also say go with sony, but thats just me...

i was going for a LCD anyway even though you could get 3 50" plasmas for a LCD, but ive heard it uses heaps more power and can leave an image burn on screen. im trying to persuade parents into buying the sony, since i play on buying a ps3 later and seeing they are they same brand...... but if there is a telly that could do better than a sony bravia, and is cheaper then they'll be happy to save some money.

I didnt think either could get image burn? Which one uses more power? Mine has a kinda screen saver thing anyway which is a good thing it powers down the screen but the not tv itself so no burn and I suppose less power? The bravias are really good I hear. If you find a model that you're keen on the best thing to do it read reviews about it. If you're happy with it and the review is good then I would go with that...

Plasmas have much better picture then lcd, and it does not cost more to use in electrictiy.

Most plasmas have image burn protection esp. Panasonic. It's called Pixel shifting. Protects against screen burn.

Panasonic Veirra are beautiful, and have great reviews all over the web. They stomp any lcd.

I have one myself, and get a 42 inch way below $1000.

our family plans to buy a new HDtv next month, and i was have a few questions

1. which brands are really good for your money

A. If your after value for money then you want a samsung, you have to spend a fair bit to get up to the sort of level that beats them, and they are good all round TV's, alot better than the budget brands. LCD is a cheaper technology than plasma so your better off going with that. Only the very best LCD's rival plasma but by that time they cost around the same anyway.

2. is the higher the contrast ratio the better?

A. Generally speaking higher numbers are better. Contrast Ratio, brightness and pixel count all want to be high as possible. Only response time is different, with this the lower the figure the better, look for 5ms or better and dont bother with anything with a figure higher than 8ms.

3. is getting a 46" better than getting a 42" (for gaming)

A. Screen size has absolutely nothing to do with whether a tv is good for games or not. 42" is a good size, but if you can find a bigger set thats in your udget and good sepcs then get one of those if you have room for it.

oh and if you have any recommendations of tv models, ill be happy to look at them

thank you

Answers in bold.^ ^ ^ ^ Sony are a good brand too but are a bit more money than samsung, but then they are a bit better. Things like phillips, sharp, Toshiba are all under Samsung.

thanks for that, i guess since this tv will last about 8 years (we've had our samsung SDTV for 8 years) it will be best to get the best, and by the time its time for the new technology, i'd probably have my own place by then :P

the samsung in the catalogue ive read the 100hz is terrible, and the bravia 46XBR is really good, so i might as well get that or a 42 or 40 one

thanks for your help :)

Things like 100Hz technology, or even 120 Hz is increasing the spec of the set. If your looking for higher end features like that your better off with the better brand like sony. That kind of thing though is best and most noticable on gaming so if your going to be doing a fair bit of gaming its worth having. Your definatly better off going for a Sony set over a sammy one, so your making a good choice there.

Well, unless you plan to hang your TV on a wall, a Samsung DLP will be the most inexpensive solution. It should cost significantly less than comparable Plasma or LCD sets. It will also give you the most value for the money. Look into Samsung's A650 and A750 DLP models for 2008.

it's a shame sony didnt keep making SXRD sets, while not ideally the most cost effective, it would probably have been a great solution for you.

BTW, the 100hz feature is something i wouldnt put alot of stock in, it's largely a gimmick in my opinion atfer seeing what the feature does to content. That is one area where Plasmas definetly win out, as they handle motion very well without the need for any added features.

I wouldnt push you right into getting a plasma though since you mentioned you and your family would be using it, as in spite of their resistance to burn in, they do need to be babied a little, and that complicates things when there's alot of different people using it.

Samsung 71 or 81 series with the 120hz tech...

Sony XBR Lcds are also great...

46 vs 42...... Number return rate for all electronic retailers..... IT WASN'T BIG ENOUGH!!!

If you are on the ropes of which one then get the 46 so you don't regret it!!
