I can understand that some people, like you, havnt heard of sharp before. Most of their HDTV's sell under the name: Sharp Aquos or Aquos. Those are actually some pretty nice tvs. Overall I guess the quality brands for lcd HDTVS are: Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic and Philips, maybe LG but those are it. (dont blame me if I might have forgotten one) Samsung and Sony are really mainstream, meaning that they are advertised at gaming-conventions and that most people buy them. However Sharp, pana and Philips may not be forgotten. Phillips has the ambi-light modes, which you either hate or love and Sharp is just an allround good producer. They are one of the firsts to make the step from producing SDTV to HDTVS, so theyve got the most experience when it comes down to technologie. Overall it doesnt really matter which one you purchase, chose the one you like most, each of the named brands produce good HDTV's/deliver good service.
First of all, there are a lot of HDTVs in each size, I dont know all of them, but to find some good discussions and ratings about the HDTV your interested in, I advice you take a look at: http://www.avsforum.com , it has a section completely devoted to HD-Tv's.
About size/price, it depends on where you live (canadian dollars/american?) anyways, sometimes its better to buy the best 37' instead of the cheapest 42'. But overall I can say that most of the models in store now are the ones released by the end of last summer so its all pretty new hardware made by the top-brands. So take a look at the avsforum and take a look at what they say, but dont stay there to long because theres always something people can **** about. For example, my samsung tv was completely bashed on thread 1, while thread 2 made it look like it was the best thing in the world. On the end of the day, the TV will be in your room and you will be watching television on it. So you should really decide for yourself, however when you go to the store next time theres some advice id like to give you:
First thing is that most HDTV's are shown while blu ray's are being displayed on it. This doesnt give a real good example of what normal television channels will look like because these images are in FULL-HD with zero latency and so on. Pretty much every HD tv looks fantastic with blu-rays on it. So ask the employees if it is possible to watch some cable television, maybe some freeview, or just try to get the same kind of input in the store as the one your having at home. At home you wont be watching blu ray 24/7, youll probably be watching dvd's and tv-channels mostly so thats what should look good aswell. Compare this on the models and try to get your hands on the remote of the tv aswell, this will allow you to change some settings and mess around a little with contrasts and colors. A lot of tv's in shops have a 'shop' setting which gives everything a pink-lollipop look. Try to adjust this yourself and see how dark, white, red, bleu etc the screen can get.
It might seam rude that I dont tell you: the philips really is waaaay better, or something like it, but I dont tell you this because its up to own preferences, all those tv's are great and you yourself should pic the one you like because you will be watching it mostly:)
