I went through the sticky before making this and I didn't really understand any of it. Moreso it didn't really go to what I needed or wanted to know (no offence to the writer) so please bear with my lack of knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. I currently own the Turtlebeach X11 headset for the Xbox/PC. I want to try and get a 5.1 wireless headset but I don't know much about headsets or sound peripherals in general. Hopefully I would be able to use the headset for watching movies in 5.1 on my xbox/PC as well.

I'm currently using a standard def TV for the xbox and for the PC I've been using the front panel headphone and mic jacks for the X11 because the audio jack via motherboard is being used by my external PC speakers.

I've been looking into the Razer Chimaera 5.1 headset shown here http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.225974700. Would there be any conflicts using this with my current set up? I know that the headset still has to be wired to the XBOX controller and that doesn't bother me. My other question is that would I be able to connect the base to the PC with the optical cable to have it be 5.1 and would I be able to use the optical cable from Xbox to base while having the analog cables plugged into my SDTV? I have a concern that the mic might be too sensitive from this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti1VbCPPHgM youtube review. I haven't heard any other complaints from other sites regarding the issue.

I am more than open to hearing other recommendations for headsets but I don't really want to go more expensive than the Chimaera. Wired would be cheaper but after using my X11 for a while all the wires start to get clunky and a hassle to deal with. Any input, advice, or recommendations would be great appreciated. Hope to hear from anyone soon.

No offense taken! Reading your note, it seems like the sole reason you are considering another pair of headphones is to get 5.1 audio in a headset. The Razer Chimaeras do NOT do 5.1 surround sound. That is an out-and-out lie on the part of Razer marketing. The only thing "surround" about the headphones is their use of Dolby Headphone, which is done at the processor level, not the headphones. The headset is a standard two-channel stereo headset. I explain it in more detail in the Headphone FAQ in the section, HEADPHONE "SURROUND SOUND" EXPLAINED, but in summary, there are very, very few true 5.1 or 7.1 headphones. You can view the most recent discussion about such headphones, including some of those that are on the market in this thread: http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/28880762. You can get Dolby Headphone support by buying an Astro Mixamp and using it with your Turtle Beach headphones (or any headphones, for that matter). Consider carefully why you are replacing the X11 with this knowledge, then come back and ask some follow-up questions. Happy to help out. Happy gaming, Boz

Ah thank you for understanding and responding. The other main reason I want to upgrade my headset is because wired is starting to get in the way. I'm not too anal about having true 5.1 or the Dolby Headphone 5.1 (I'll call it simulated 5.1 just cause it's easier to remember). I'm not much of an audiophile, but I would like to have something that would give me a more immersive experience than stereo for gaming and movies. I also want a more convenient way to play/watch without having to deal with wires running around. I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help me out with.

1) So adding a mixamp would allow my X11 headset to get the simulated (I don't know what the proper word would be :P) 5.1?

2) If I do go the wireless route are is there any loss in quality getting a headset that has the built in simulated 5.1 over using a mixamp (if it's even possible to use a mixamp with wireless)?

3) Would it be more of a hassle moving the setup between my xbox to my pc and vice versa by going the mixamp with x11/other wireless headset or would it be more convenient to just get a headset that has built in simulated 5.1? 4) Would I need a dedicated sound card on my pc or would the integrated sound via my motherboard be good enough for simulated 5.1?

The Chimaera seems to cover the basis (to my knowledge) for a viable headset, minus the lack if simulated 5.1 when using the mic on pc, but the price is what's making me shudder a bit considering the lack of full pc support. I can stomach it because I'm primarily a console user anyway. Getting the astro mixamp at the $140 price makes me feel that I might as well spend the extra dough and pay for the convenience of an all in one solution. The Ear Forece DSS seems to be more forgiving in price but it would still leave me with the issue of being wired to something where I would prefer a wireless solution. I have a buddy that's willing to buy my X11 for $30 so I'll be able to recoup some of the cash that way (I paid $45 for them new). I know I kind of seem adamant about eh Chimaeras lol, it's the lack of knowledge and it seems like a product that suits my needs well. I just want to be more certain of it's worth cause I'm not the best judge of it with my current base of knowledge.

The PX5 also seems to be a good option but the $250 price tag is a bit too much to stomach for me. I would rather stomach not having simulated 5.1 while using a mic on PC than pay another $50 plus tax. The possible conflict with wireless routers and such also kind of puts me off as the router is my house isn't too far away from me and we have a bunch of wireless gadgets. I think the Chimaera's 5.8ghz frequency is a plus here but it's a minor thing probably. Doesn't seem like a deal breaker.

On the Logitech front I looked at the F540 but they are console only and the G930 which seem to be PC only (as the mic won't work on PC). So I guess Logitech is out.

Steel Series 7XB doesn't do mic on pc so that's a hit against it.

Overall I can't seem to find another good alternative to the Chimaera in terms of a wireless solution (and I think I can always get an external pc mic if I want to do simulated 5.1 with mic but I'm not sure how that would work). I am open to any suggestion or words of wisdom. If a budget would help, I would prefer not spending more than $200. Less is always better. Last question is do you think I am going out of my way and out of my wallet for convenience please let me know. Since I don't know much about this topic, I am open to the opinion of those who know more.

I greatly appreciate your help on this matter dude :D

Note that I, personally, would not use any of these. Going wireless is almost always a sacrifice in terms of audio fidelity quality. That said, I think you're going to want the Chimaeras given your criteria.

You're right to be concerned about interference from the PX5, and there are no wireless headphones with the features you are looking for from traditional headphone companies like Sennheiser and Audio Technica, so you're pretty limited unless you want to wait to see how the TRITTON Warhead 7.1s shake out.

If you don't mind keeping your wired setup, the Turtle Beach Ear Force DSS offers Dolby Headphone processing with any headset. Just something to consider.

Good luck,

Boz
