Hi guys! i'm a long-time lem looking to build my first custom rig. i have a 360 and xbone but more of my friends have been playing pc games and my laptop aint cutting it anymore.

ive been doing lots of research but i really need the help of the all-knowledgeable master race haha.

my budget is 1000-1500 if i can get the better parts on sale.

i'm looking at running the i7 4790 and im interested in overclocking. few questions.

1. graphics card- do i need two? i think it is the gtx 770 that is around 350... is it worth it for two of those or one of the new 650$? could i get by with one?

2. liquid coolers? is it worth it?

3. i plan to play this on a 60" led tv (not 3d) i wasnt planning on buying a hd monitor if that makes a difference. ( i may buy one in the future but not in the next few months)

4. 16 gb of ram or 8? i don't do video editing, the most graphical intensive is gonna be gaming.

5. on motherboards i was looking at the asus z97 mark 2, but what about the x99? what is the difference for gaming?

6. also, what exactly does sli and crossfire do for gaming and do i need it?

I wanna be able to play ultra on this thing.

To start, an i7 is usually considered overkill for gaming.

1. Since you only plan to play on 1 screen (I'm assuming it's 1080p since it's a TV) you will only need 1 card. The GTX 770 or GTX 970 is a good all around card price vs. performance. You could go for the 980 if you have the money, but that seems overkill for you IMO.

2. A good liquid cooling system will be quieter and possibly allow you to overclock further. It depends on the cooling system though.

3. A descent monitor will have better refresh rates and less input lag than most TVs. Your TV can certainly work fine for now though. You might not even notice a difference.

4 8GBs for now, 16GBs to "futureproof"

5. x99 is for a different set of CPUs (Haswell-E) and DDR4 RAM. It's brand new and costs quite a bit more for the motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

6. Essentially SLI and Crossfire (Xfire) are the terms used by Nvidia and AMD respectively for using more than one of the same graphics card in a system work together.

Since you're not going to be doing editing you'll want to grab i5 and 8Gb of RAM.

Nope, pick up my build and you're good to go with up to 4 monitors.

EDIT: if you didn't notice I did put 2 GPUs in my build, you're able to game on 4K at 60fps if you wish to.

The answer to that question depends on the resolution you'll be running at and what kind of performance you want for games, but it's not necessary to have a card for each monitor.

@PredatorRules:

You forgot the OS, and I'm assuming since TC was using a laptop...

The KB/M as well, and possibly headphones and a mic combo.
