I built my PC and pretty much know what im doing, but im about to buy a new HDD off newegg and want to be sure on some things. To set up the drive, all I do is plug the SATA cable to the MOBO and HDD, then connect the power cable to the HDD and im done right?

The drive should be found one the PC and windows will boot up and the HDD should be shown on the computer window right?

thanks.

Windows is still on your old drive, and before you can use your new one you'll have to format it, but you've got the basic idea.

You'll have to format the drive, but you can do this from windows explorer after you've already booted. All you have to do to format the drive is right click and select format.

If the drive is unpartitioned, it actually won't show up in the "my computer" list. You'll have to open up Computer Management (Control panel->administrative tools) and go to the "Disk Management" section and create a partition.

That is the correct answer. New drives come unpartitioned. They won't show up in explorer unless you partition the drive first in disk management.

SATAs are so easy to install plug, partition and play. For future reference if you ever install and IDE ensure you have your master and slave jumper setting correct.

You'll need to format it.
