I've decided to build a fairly decent gaming PC. I'm picking a processor right now, and my price range is $300 canadian, or $281.00 US. I've narrowed my decision down to two choices.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115003

or the

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103773

Which one will provide the best performance and reliability? Or given my price range, is there a better processor I could afford?

Thankyou for all your help.

I was leaning more towards AMD, just because of brand preference... thats why I was asking Gamespot, for un biased advice.

Those two processors are practically on equal footing with one another. However, the E6600 runs cooler and can be overclocked A LOT further than the 6000+.

Have you thought about waiting until July 22nd for a $266 Q6600?

Your post was really helpful, and what I really wanted to know :D.

Will this Q6600 be that much better that it is worth the wait, and the extra money?

I just found out that NewEgg doesn't ship to Canada, so is this a universal price drop, or a special deal on NewEgg?

Yeah, it's worldwide.

It means that Intel will sell the Q6600 in 1000 unit volumes to global suppliers (who sell it to retailers, who sell it to you).

Well, given this, this will give me a month to save up $$$, and weigh my options better, and pick the rest of the parts. Thankyou for your help.

Oh gawd. -_-

Seeing as K10 won't hit desktops until 2008, I don't see why he shouldn't go with the Q6600. Also, K10 will launch with a top speed of 2GHz.

Intel's quad is here, now, with benchmarks and it destorys all other CPUs in multithreaded apps. Native or not, it does what a quad core is supposed to do.

I found this article really great and it might be helpful to you in making decision how to choose a CPU in term of price and performance.

a quad, native or not, at $266 is a damn fine deal. I bought my q6600 a few days ago, and it works like a dream. And considering dual-cores are just now being supported, I dont see why he shouldnt get a quad now.

Yeah, my mistake, August it is.

But that's the 2.0GHz model, the 2.3-2.4GHz model will come out in early 2008 (can't find a link now, I'll look for it later).

You can't if the chips aren't able to go further than that.

The fact that AMD is struggling to make faster binned computers is a sign that Barcelona (or AMD's fab process) isn't made for blistering speed. This may change though, if AMD gets a new silicon revision but that'll take a while to hit the retail channel.

It's not that simple now.

Core 2 isn't an inefficient, low IPC count microarchitecture. It's fast, efficient and very scalable.

well unless you want to future proff it for the next 5 years there isn't much point, there is no current game than can even take full advantage of 2 core let alone 4

Who said that games aren't good for multithreading? They're perfect for multithreading. It's just that developers are only starting to multithread their games now.

Again, I point to Supreme Commander for multithreaded gaming (I'll try and find a benchmark).

2457? wow, for being centuries ahead of us, that is really low tech. you should have something like 1000+ core CPU, .4 Ghz CPU (cooling) and Radeon XXXXXXXX164301675017XXXTTTXXX with GDDR444444444444444

If you OC the E6600 to 3.2 which is easy by the way you will beat the Amd by 30%ish.

Well, I'm hoping for this PC to last me a while... maybe add a bit more memory in a few years, but not build a new pc every year.
